What are the responsibilities and job description for the Substitute Teacher for After School Art Program position at Doodles Academy?
About us
Doodles Academy is a national arts non-profit dedicated to ensuring all kids, regardless of their background, have access to high-quality arts curricula. We do this by providing a powerful art curriculum, either at low cost or for free, to schools and communities that may otherwise not be able to afford it. We also design our lessons for educators of all backgrounds, even those who are not formally trained art teachers.
Our 'home-base' is in Ann Arbor, where we develop and test curricula in workshops and classes.
We are URGENTLY looking for a Substitute Teachers to work MONDAYS AND TUESDAYS FROM 3:30-5:30 for our afterschool program
Description: Seeking 1-2 SUBSTITUTE lead teachers for a district-wide art program. Applicants must have experience teaching and working with elementary-aged kids, valid fingerprints and CPR certification, and after-school availability. Art specific teaching experience is not required.
Teachers should be comfortable taking charge of a classroom of up to 18, and have a good grasp on classroom management. We intentionally build learning environments that encourages creativity, curiosity, and risk-taking. All teachers work with a supplied curriculum and work with and provide updates to the manager. They will be required to transport materials for their classes, and in the case of Subs, they will get the materials for the regular lead teacher OR retrieve them from our storage unit (located between Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti).
Substitute teachers are teachers who are familiar with the curriculum, attend project walk-throughs, and are able to step in and teach without a lot of notice (although we try to give as much notice as possible). If desired, this position can lead to a position as lead teacher. Generally speaking, if subs have a lot of availability, you can expect to cover 3-4 times throughout a term, but this varies a lot depending on the lead teacher's availability and schedule.
During the school year, Lead Teachers works in our after-school program, which takes place in schools around Ann Arbor. Each session lasts 6-8 weeks, with breaks in between. Lead teachers are the center of the classroom; depending on the class size and volunteer availability, they may or may not be teaching independently, so they must feel comfortable working with groups of students on their own, as well as potentially managing volunteers, interns, and/or assistants in their classroom.
In addition to after-school programming, Lead Teachers have additional opportunities to work in our camp programming over school breaks, occasional workshops and 1 day art-making events, as well as formally supporting and mentoring other teachers in our curriculum.
We are looking for subs primarily for the after-school and camp programs.
Subbing (Afterschool Programming):$50 p/teaching hour for the first-day subbing as a lead teacher regardless of class-size. As part of this initial rate, subs are responsible for getting the materials for the class from the teacher. If subbing spans multiple dates, regular rates ($30 p/h) will apply to the remainder of the dates in the series. Assistant subs get the assistant rate ($25).
*All Lead Teachers need to have their fingerprints up to date through the Ann Arbor Public schools (they are valid 1 year from the last time you taught), will need to have a background check run with the AAPS, and are expected to have and maintain an up-to-date CPR/First Aid certificate. They are hired by Doodles Academy as a contract employee.
