Summary
Under the supervision of the Tourism Zone Commission Administrator and Chairperson, the tax specialist performs a variety of accounting and administrative duties. This position requires excellent customer service skills and exercising initiative. This position will be full-time.
Essential Functions
The tax specialist is responsible for auditing marketplace provider sites and pursuing unpermitted properties, preparing documents related to exemptions, fees, and billing and recording them in the Tourism Zone database. This individual will be processing permit applications and deactivation paperwork, fulfilling public data requests while maintaining public records and public meeting law standards, using quantitative analysis to synthesize data, identify issues and trends, prepare analytical and statistical reports as needed, and assumes the statutory responsibilities of the Administrator in his or her absence. Under the direction of the Administrator, this individual will fulfill a variety of accounting, clerical, and customer service functions. The tax specialist will be responsible for learning and maintaining a thorough knowledge of office processes and a high-level understanding of both Wisconsin room tax law (Wis. Stat. 66.0615) and Open Meetings Law (Wis. Stat. 19.81).
Knowledge
Knowledge of modern office methods and procedures, equipment and filing systems, Excel and Microsoft experience, basic accounting or math functions, strong verbal, non-verbal, and written communication skills, independent work ethic, proofreading, and statistical and recordkeeping principles and procedures are required.
Skill/Ability
The ability to accept responsibility, to make decisions, maintain strict confidentiality, and to effectively prioritize work are essential in this position. Interpersonal communications, verbal and written, with a diverse range of people, including the proper handling of sensitive situations, the ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with citizens contacted in the course of work, meeting the public tactfully, and courteously answering questions in person and over the telephone are required. The tax specialist must have considerable ability and proficiency with desktop computer equipment to process, access, retrieve, or input information using Windows, word processing and spreadsheet software or other standardized software. Ability to research and obtain pertinent information through various resources.
Education/Experience
Typical qualifications would be equivalent to possession of a high school diploma or G.E.D., with courses in word processing, and spreadsheets, supplemented with general business office courses and five (5) years of increasingly responsible secretarial and clerical experience. Some college education is preferred.

Wages, Fringe Benefits, Terms of Employment
Wages for the position are established annually by the Commission. They are currently $24-26 per hour dependent upon qualifications. Current fringe benefits include participation in the Wisconsin Retirement System retirement plan, paid time off, paid holidays, and health insurance.
Job Location and Hours
Position typically is based at the Commission office located in Sturgeon Bay. Position is a non-exempt position with a standard Monday through Friday 40-hour work week. Additional hours may be required as needed to attend meetings or meet workload demands. Position requires periodic travel within Door County to other governmental offices, businesses, etc. Travel may be required outside Door County for functions related to the position including but not limited to conferences, seminars, or other meetings as necessary.
