DoorDash is seeking a talented and experienced litigator for a unique in-house opportunity as Senior Counsel, Employment Litigation. This is a new role, which is responsible for hands-on representation and defense in all aspects of adversarial employment-related matters. The role will require candidates to, among other things, draft and file position statements with regulators; draft, file and argue motions to compel arbitration; interview witnesses and review documents for case assessment; draft, serve, and respond to discovery requests; review documents for production; take and defend depositions; draft, file and argue motions for summary judgment; prepare witness and exhibit lists; prepare witnesses for trial and arbitration hearings; examine and cross-examine witnesses at trial and arbitration hearings; and file pre- and post-trial/hearing briefs as appropriate. In other words, candidates for this role must be prepared to handle every single aspect of an employment dispute, end-to-end.
This role reports into the Director of Employment Law on our Legal team.
You’re excited about this opportunity because you…
- Enjoy litigating employment-related disputes and believe that experience will be even more fulfilling when done on behalf of a single client, and free from the constraints of the billable hour
- Get energy from a supportive, team-based working environment where you can simultaneously brainstorm litigation strategies with invested partners and colleagues while ultimately owning the strategy design and execution
- Care about getting 1% better by using the information you learn through litigation to continuously strengthen DoorDash’s policies and processes
- Prioritize establishing and maintaining relationships, credibility and trust with clients, stakeholders, legal team members, and other colleagues, through both your day-to-day interactions and your litigation outcomes
We’re excited about you because…
- You have a JD from an accredited law school and are licensed to practice in the State of California. This is a must-have. You are not required to live in California, but you are required to be licensed to practice there.
- You have 8 years of substantive experience with litigation, including meaningful experience with labor and employment litigation, specifically. Although you are not required to have checked every litigation box in order to qualify for this role, you should be prepared to describe how your experience enables you to do so going forward.
- You have great communication skills (oral and written). You understand the importance of communicating with internal stakeholders in a professional, honest and empathetic manner. You are comfortable filing documents with and making presentations to third parties with limited oversight.
- You exhibit sound judgment. You are able to hold two opposing ideas at the same time, consider arguments objectively, and make reasoned recommendations that are holistically in the Company’s best interests. You are comfortable exercising that judgment in deciding when outside counsel ought to be brought in, as well as managing outside counsel in a financially disciplined manner.
- You understand that you will be personally responsible for performing document review for the cases on your docket, and you are still excited about this role. (You also have a sense of humor – but, seriously, you will be the one performing document review.)
We expect this position to be filled by 3/26/25
