Job Title: Paraprofessional- Special Education
Primary Purpose:
The Paraprofessional’s primary purpose is to assist teachers in the performance of their duties. Work is under the supervision of a teacher and involves aiding individuals and groups of students. Duties may include working one-on-one with students.
Qualifications:
Graduation from high school supplemented by completion of an approved Paraprofessional training course related to the field of work and experience, 60 college credit hours or demonstrated ability in working with children, or any equivalent combination of training and experience approved by administration. Additional training specific to working with Special Education students may be required.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Ability to interact with all levels of staff Strong oral communication skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to maintain self control under stress
- Bilingual- proficient Spanish speaker preferred
- Able to work flexible hours-some evenings and weekends may be required
Major Duties and Responsibilities
1. Work includes aiding in classrooms, libraries, and laboratories
2. Assist in supervision of Special Education students
3. Assist with the preparation of teaching aids and the assembly of materials as directed by the teacher
4. Assist in maintaining records
5. General assistance functions designed to fulfill the instructional, social and/or behavioral goals and objectives as planned by the teacher
6. Perform various other general support duties
7. Assist with the physical needs of exceptional students
8. Tutor students in preparation for STAAR testing
9. Maintain regular and reliable attendance
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Classroom students
Equipment Used:
Personal computer, printer, fax machine, laminating machine and copier.
Working Conditions:
May be required to lift 5-10 lbs frequently, 10-50 lbs occasionally, and more than 50 pounds infrequently. Able to maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent use of voice/vocals. Moderate noise levels. Moderate walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, bending, twisting. May work indoors and outdoors in varying climate conditions. Subject to visual acuity, speech/hearing, hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity
