RESPONSIBILITIES:
Works under the supervision of the Branch Manager. Performs the duties of a department member including, but not limited to, reference desk service, inter-library loan, subject material display and promotion, technical processing of materials, programming, weeding and inventorying of the library’s collections, building security and public safety.
Promotes good public relations by providing courteous and helpful service to all library customers. Knows, and consistently and accurately employs, library policies and procedures. Practices model reference behaviors to correctly and completely answer information queries. Assists and instructs library users in the operation of library computers.
Responsible for inter-library service including the generation and fulfillment of requests for material as well as their circulation and return.
As required, attends and participates in library meetings and staff development programs. Maintains professional and state-mandated credentials by reading professional literature and attending work related conferences and courses. This position requires that the employee work at the Cambridge Branch on alternating Fridays/Saturdays and may substitute at the Central Branch library as needed.
Other duties as assigned.
Examples of Typical Tasks:
- Establishes and maintains good working relations with all library users, volunteers, and co-workers. Promotes good public relations by providing courteous and helpful service to all patrons. May work with volunteers and community groups in providing designated adult services or library tours.
- Assists the public by answering their requests for information using model reference behaviors to correctly and completely answer information queries. Assists the public in their selection of material in all formats including electronic and web based. Assists library users in their use of computer software and equipment.
- May perform circulation desk duties including but not limited to checking library materials in and out, issuing borrowers cards, assisting in maintaining records of circulated materials, accurately collecting and recording fines and other library fees.
- Answers the telephone in a courteous manner, directs inquiries to appropriate departments, takes accurate messages. Aids patrons in their use of the public photocopier. May assist in shelving library materials, weeding and inventorying collection.
- Assists with general library program planning and implementation, and for publicity and promotion of those programs as well as the marketing of general library services. Assists in special projects and grant activities as assigned.
- May assist in developing, planning, promoting, and implementing programs of community interest for teens and/or adults. May assist in the development and implementation of surveys, plans, policies, and promotions relating to the provision of library service. May assist in the development and implementation of grants in support of adult services.
- Assists technical service staff by preparing library materials for public use.
- Prepares bi-monthly reports as well as other reports as requested.
- Responsible for the orderly public use of the library and its services as well as for building security and public safety.
- As required, attends and participates in library meetings and staff development programs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or equivalent required, some college preferred.
Strong written and verbal communication skills in the English language. Ability to use the library’s automated catalog and circulation system. Experience using computers including but not limited to the searching the Internet, using email, entering information into a database, and word processing. Ability to prepare library materials for public use including covering books, stamping books, etc. Ability to operate office equipment. General clerical skills. Ability to accurately handle and record monetary exchanges. Ability to get along well with all customers, volunteers, and library staff. Ability to take direction and to work independently as well as with others. Ability to work well under pressure.
Primary work site is the Hurlock Branch Library. Some travel to professional meetings and workshops is required. Flexibility regarding work hours is needed.
Equipment: Must be able to use and/or operate equipment including but not limited to multi-line telephone, fax machine, fully loaded book cart, passenger elevator, photocopier, personal computer, calculator, circulation equipment, and be able to lift 25 pounds.

Pay: $31,000.00 - $33,000.00 per year
