QUALIFICATIONS :
1. Current Licensure to practice as a registered nurse in the state of South Carolina.
2. Minimum experience of two years as a registered nurse, preferably pediatric, adolescent, emergency, or community health.
3. Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross BLS Certification.
4. Highly recommended to be affiliated with professional organization (NASN / SCASN).
5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

JOB SUMMARY :
The special assignment nurse serves a specific student population; facilitates positive student responses to normal development; promotes health and safety; intervenes with actual and potential health problems; provides case management, self-advocacy, and learning. The same applies to faculty and staff.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES :
1. Supports and upholds the mission, vision, and strategic goals of Dorchester School District Two.
2. Apply appropriate theory as basis for decision making in nursing practice.
3. Collect information about health status of students / faculty in a systematic manner while maintaining confidentiality on an as needed basis.
4. Provide nursing care, support, and advice for students and / or faculty who have suffered an accident or illness.
5. Store, administer and assist with medication in accordance with school district policies.
6. Provide training for school-based staff to support students with health care needs. To include, but not limited to asthma, diabetes, seizures, allergies, and tube feedings.
7. Complete accident / incident reporting processes for students, staff, volunteers, and visitors
8. Maintain confidentiality regarding all school and health related issues, unless legally mandated to report.
9. Collaborate with others in the planning for a safe school environment including identification and notification of safety hazards to appropriate school personnel.
10. Conduct and facilitate DHEC recommended screenings and notify parents / guardians if a problem is detected.
11. Follow the communicable disease prevention and control program in cooperation with local and state public health agencies.
12. Provide annual CPR and First Aid training for appropriate staff.
13. Ensure the writing and implementation of Individual Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and Emergency Action Plans (EAPs), as appropriate.
14. Consults with 504 and IEP teams regarding students with special health needs. Participates in 504 and IEP meetings as needed.
15. Documents, compiles, and analyzes data for required reports on school health services such as the 45-day immunization report, two-week survey, and end of the year report.
16. Monitoring and maintaining immunizations, ensuring appropriate exclusion for infectious illnesses, and reporting communicable diseases as required by law.
17. Make appropriate assessments and referrals for suspected abuse / neglect as a mandated reporter.
18. Provides staff UAP Training on tasks to be delegated to support student health and safety.
19. Serve as a preceptor for nursing students from local colleges / universities.
20. Attend all nurses' meetings and / or in-services as directed by the school district.
21. Assume responsibility for continuing education and professional development.
22. Provide annual BBP OSHA review / training for faculty and staff in accordance with the District Exposure Control Plan.
23. Coordinates and monitors Hepatitis B Vaccinations for at risk employees in accordance with the Exposure Control Plan.
24. Collaborate with parents, doctors, and other health personnel to assure the health and safety of students.
25. Keeps current in latest trends and developments regarding school health and pediatric nursing.
