EMC Mechanical Services is searching for a Plumbing Equipment Operator to join our Construction Team! The Plumbing Equipment Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining heavy machinery and equipment to install and repair underground plumbing systems. This includes operating excavators, backhoes, trenchers, and other specialized equipment to dig trenches, lay pipes, and ensure proper installation of plumbing infrastructure for commercial projects.

What You’ll Do:
- Operating Heavy Equipment
- Safely operate excavation machinery (ex. Backhoes, excavators, trenchers) to dig trenches for underground plumbing installation.
- Operate various equipment used for laying pipes, including specialized machines for trenching and pipe placement.
- Ensure equipment is functioning properly and troubleshoot any issues during operation.
- Installation and Repair of Underground Plumbing Systems
- Assist with the installation of underground pipes, fittings, and drainage systems.
- Collaborate with plumbers to ensure accurate placement of pipes according to blueprints and project specifications.
- Install and repair sewer lines, storm drains, water mains, and other underground plumbing systems.
- Site Preparation and Cleanup
- Prepare job sites by clearing debris, marking locations for trenching, and setting up barriers or warning signs.
- Backfill trenches and ensure the ground is compacted after plumbing systems are installed.
- Maintain clean and organized work areas throughout the project.
- Safety Compliance
- Follow all safety guidelines and protocols when operating heavy machinery, working with plumbing systems, and handling hazardous materials.
- Ensure trenches are properly shored up to prevent collapse and maintain worker safety.
- Use personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, and safety boots at all times.
- Maintenance of Equipment
- Conduct routine maintenance and inspections of all equipment to ensure it operates safely and efficiently.
- Report any malfunctioning or damaged equipment to the supervisor for repairs.
- Maintain equipment according to manufacturer guidelines and ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Collaboration and Communication
- Work closely with plumbers and other crew members to ensure smooth operations and timely completion of projects.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors to report progress, potential issues, and request materials or tools as needed.
- Assist in coordinating the movement of materials and tools across the site.
- Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain records of equipment usage, maintenance schedules, and any issues encountered during the operation.
- Complete reports on project status, work completed, and equipment condition.
Qualifications
What You’ll Bring:
- Experience
- Minimum of two years of experience operating heavy equipment in underground plumbing or construction.
- Knowledge of plumbing systems including trenching, pipe installation, and underground utilities.
- Education
- Valid certification or training to operate heavy equipment.
- Driving Requirements
- Must have a valid Virginia driver’s license.
- Must have positive points on state driving record.
- Must be at least 21 years of age unless company approval is granted.
- Must not have had a DUI, DWI, or reckless driving conviction in the last five years.
- All driving records are run as part of our pre-employment process and reviewed at the discretion of the Safety Team.
- Physical Requirements
- Must be able to crawl, kneel, squat, and climb.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis, unassisted.
- Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
