Investopedia is seeking a contract editor to be part of a growing, consumer-focused digital financial news and analysis operation with hustle and big ambitions. In short, we’re looking for someone who can help us get better every day. You’ll have a combination of:
- Comfort with a range of topics. Those could be personal finance and investing, the economy, stocks and markets, corporate news or a combination of several of those.
- Thoughtful decision-making ability. You make assignments with confidence, explaining clearly to reporters whether something must be done ASAP, later today, longer-term, or all of the above – and why. When a writer gets an assignment from you, they know what’s expected and what they need to figure out.
- A knack for diagnosis. Is a story perfect as filed or does it need work? Should you fix it yourself or send it back for more reporting? Should it be finished quickly or is this an opportunity to teach a writer? You’ll be making choices like these every day.
- Attention to detail, quality and high journalistic standards. You’ll be editing copy, writing headlines and selecting art. You’re comfortable being the only editor on a story, especially when it’s breaking news. Familiarity with SEO practices is a plus.
- Speed and versatility. You have the ability to work quickly when news breaks and conditions change. You can move easily between breaking news, features and analysis.
Finally and most importantly, you value teamwork, collaboration and collegiality. You eagerly build relationships with and work alongside colleagues with a range of experience levels, including early career and entry-level journalists.
Experience:
- 10 years editing experience at a high-output publication where financial news and information is central to its mission
- Experience editing both breaking and enterprise financial news stories
