Description
Reporting to the Director of Community Programs, as a Peer Leader, that role becomes his/her responsibility. Exercises good judgment and a commitment to safety is first and foremost. A Peer Leader’s behavior must be exemplary. Must present oneself as a positive role model to all Teen Center youth who will be observing your every action. The Peer Leader assists members of the Teen Center in finding their way around the facility, as well as learning about all programs and services available. The dress code is casual, however, there are a few restrictions: spaghetti strap tops and bare midriffs printed T’s, short shorts/skirts, sagging pants, and caps will not be allowed. As a role model for the members, your appearance is important. The Peer Leader is expected to treat all members with dignity and respect.
GENERAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists Teens with their homework, make-up work, etc.
- Helps to maintain a fun, but safe environment for everyone
- Plans activities and events that support the objectives of the Teen Center, run topic and arts-based activities, community/environmental projects, recreational activities, and sporting activities. Participates in all Teen Center workshops
- Befriends and supports individuals in the Teen Center setting as well as mentoring and supporting individual members to encourage social inclusion
- Maintains Teen Center equipment and supplies
- Communicates program rules and enforcement procedures to participating members for the purpose of ensuring their understanding and the potential consequences of violation
- Monitors Teen Center participants, the computer room, the lounge area, recreational activities, etc., for the purpose of ensuring a safe and positive environment. Reports observations and incidents (discipline, accidents, inappropriate behavior, etc.)
- Performs administrative tasks, creates fliers, surveys, sign-in sheets, etc.
- Maintains sign-in sheets to record attendance, homework help, and workshop/activity participation
- Working with the Youth Development Specialists and using assessments done to determine the needs and interests of the Teen Center population, s/he develops and implements activities, projects, and initiatives
- Performs other duties as assigned
Requirements
REQUIRED SKILLS & COMPETENCIES:
- Must be between the age of 15 and 19 years old.
- Current enrollment in local high school.
- Minimum of C grade point average
