Description
The Dougherty County Jail is hiring for a Sergeant. The purpose of this position is to train, supervise and assist others who protect the rights of citizens by enforcing federal, state, and local laws. Responsible for supervisory, operational, and administrative duties at the Sheriff's Department, Jail Facility, or Police Department.
This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings
Essential Tasks
- Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
- Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
- Performs basic law enforcement duties as required.
- Plans, coordinates and administers law enforcement training to new recruits; instructs new employees on local policies and procedures.
- Prepares daily activity sheets and issues duty assignments; responds to calls for assistance.
- Completes a variety of standard reports and forms.
- Conducts investigations and produces associated reports.
- May prepare, serve, and log a variety of civil and magistrate papers, such as warrants and subpoenas.
- May process arrest bookings.
- Responsible for teaching the Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T) and Choosing Healthy Activities and Methods Promoting Safety (C.H.A.M.P.S) programs in schools.
- Develops and organizes crime prevention programs for adults and youth in order to meet specific group needs.
- Recruits and trains volunteers from both residential and commercial groups to support crime prevention activities.
- Responsible for designing, implementing, and monitoring crime prevention programs.
- Researches grant availability for funding.
- Manages the administrative, supervision and operational functions of intake, classification and the release process of inmates.
- Manages the operational and administrative functions of inmates in the Jail Housing Unit.
- Executes the Jail’s daily schedule.
- May provide operational training for Jail personnel.
- Responsible for conducting general and specialized training (including but not limited to State Certification of Basic Jail Officers and in-service training by POST Council Rules).
- Manages all POST related training schedules; maintains reports and documentation.
- Maintains and updates existing training material and lesson plans to ensure accuracy related to current case law issues and acts.
- Manages and supervises warrants and civil processes.
- Maintains security in judicial and government buildings and the jail facility.
- Assist Shift Supervisor with shift patrol operations.
- Responsible for evaluating work, reviewing, and approving reports.
- Interprets policies and procedures to apply to law enforcement activities and situations.
- Prepares for and testifies in court.

Minimum Qualification
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Three (3) years of law enforcement experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
o Sheriff’s Office (Dept. 3310) Requirement: Must be employed for a minimum of two (2) years of uninterrupted service with the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office/Jail Facility and no disciplinary action resulting in suspension within the past twelve (12) months. Must have a total combined minimum of three (3) years of law enforcement experience.
o Jail Facility (Dept. 3326) Requirement: Must be employed for minimum of two (2) years of uninterrupted service with the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office/Jail Facility and no disciplinary action resulting in suspension within the past twelve (12) months. Must have a total combined minimum of three (3) years of law enforcement experience. :
o General Requirements and Basic Jail Officer Certification. Position of Jail Special Investigator sergeant will require Georgia P.O.S.T. Basic Mandate Certification.
Physical Demands: Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
- Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.
Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment): Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
- Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
o Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
o Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
o Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.

Special Certifications And Licenses:
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
- General Requirements, Basic Jail Officer Certification and/or Georgia Peace Officer Certification.
o Sheriff’s Office (Dept. 3310) Requirement: General Requirements and Georgia P.O.S.T. Basic Mandate Certification. Position of Training Sergeant will require successful completion of several POST specialized instructor courses; candidates must be a certified general instructor with the GA POST Council Rules with two years instructor experience in a classroom setting.
o Jail Facility (Dept. 3326) Requirement: General Requirements, Basic Georgia Jail Officer Certification must be fulfilled within six months of appointment.
