What are the responsibilities and job description for the Detention Officer position at Dougherty County?
The Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office/Jail Division is hiring on a continuous basis for Detention Officer. The purpose of this position is to provide complete security throughout the Jail facility and to perform duties in the assigned area of responsibility by enforcing local, state, and federal laws. Responsible for supervision of inmates and completion of administrative tasks associated with the security of inmates.
This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences
• Provides for the security of employees and inmates within the institution or facility.
• Provides services within the institution such as processing of new inmates through search, recording fingerprints, taking photographs, issuing necessary supplies, and inventory of inmate’s property.
• Provides administrative tasks such as criminal background checks; examination of forensic fingerprint evidence; preparation of documentation for intake, release or transfer of inmates; maintains accurate records and documentation.
• May transport inmates as needed to other facilities, institutions, or agencies.
• Supervises inmates during meals, kitchen work, labor activities and exercise; counsels inmates when necessary.
• May prepare employee payroll and updates to all personnel files; schedule interviews, polygraph tests, urinalysis tests; prepares all monthly purchase orders and billings.
• Performs related work as assigned.
• High School Diploma or GED equivalent or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Be at least 18 years of age.
• Be a United States citizen.
• Be a Certified Jailer or eligible for Jailer Certification status in accordance with Georgia State Standards.
• Be able to pass:
o Credibility assessment test
o Medical examination
• Provide Compass/Asset scores from Technical College or University.
• Possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.
• Submit copies of the following documents to the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office/Jail at time of application:
o Birth Certificate
o Social Security Card.
o High School Diploma or equivalent
o Valid Georgia Driver’s License; and,
o DD 214 Military Discharge (if applicable).
Physical Demands: Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
• Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time. Also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office or shop machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.
Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment): Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

Special Certifications And Licenses:
• Basic Georgia Jail Officer Certification must be fulfilled within six months of appointment.
• Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
