Douglas-Cherokee Economic Authority, Inc. Upward Bound Program assists low-income, potential first-generation college students enrolled in middle & high schools to prepare for postsecondary education.

POSITION SUMMARY: Provide one-on-one assistance to students concerning high school academics and issues, the college process, and financial aid.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Recruit participants for program enrollment
  • Screen and verify participants for program enrollment eligibility and assesses needs
  • Conduct weekly meetings with participants
  • Provide one-on-one assistance to students concerning high school academics, the college admissions process, financial aid, career choices and goals, etc.
  • Conduct college/career/financial aid workshops for participants and parents
  • Develop program relationships with schools, parents, and other providers
  • Maintain participant and project records and reports in accordance with funding source and agency requirements
  • Coordinate, monitor, and manage academic tutoring program
  • Participate in cultural activities, Saturday sessions, and/or campus visits
  • Participate in and assist with the summer session and summer trip
  • Meet monthly, quarterly, and yearly program objectives
  • Work with other local DCEA TRIO programs to ensure effective collaboration
  • Provide the above services in other areas served by DCEA TRIO programs when needed

  • Complies with all rules, policies, and procedures of the agency
  • Maintains confidentiality of client and agency information

WORK SITE: Morgan County, TN

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Does not supervise anyone.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. A degree in social work, psychology, education, counseling, or other human service-related field is preferred but not required.
  • Two years delivering educational and/or counseling services for disadvantaged populations, including accessing needs and developing services plans with secondary and post-secondary goals/strategies is preferred but not required.

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Travel in the TRIO service area
  • Weekend work is required
  • Overnight and/or extended travel in and out of state to attend to meetings as required
  • Work schedule may change temporarily in summer during summer component or trips
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency is a must
  • Must have demonstrated the ability to work with diverse groups of people, handle multiple tasks, and learn and perform tasks with limited supervision
  • Strong public relations skills, energetic, enthusiastic, self-motivated, and good communications skills
  • Must have valid Tennessee driver’s license and proof of liability insurance on automobile
  • Ability to make sound decisions
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Demonstrated success in overcoming barriers similar to the target population to be served
