The signs are everywhere….. you could be working on a team that keeps Douglas County beautiful, organized, and safe. As a Traffic Technician I on the Douglas County Signs and Markings crew, you will assist with the manufacture, installation and maintenance of the traffic control signs and pavement markings that are essential to the community infrastructure.

Pay range is $23.05-28.81/hour, and benefits include 4-day work week during summer, $400 clothing allowance, comp time and our affordable and generous County Benefits package Employee Benefit Guide.

One day in the city, in the mountains the next… Douglas County is diverse and beautiful. Our Signs and Markings Team covers all unincorporated roads in the County, meaning that no day is ever the same for our Signs and Markings Team.

Douglas County supports CDL license training, and Traffic Technicians can progress to Level II and Senior upon completion of experience and training requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (The following examples are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive.)


PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Operates equipment including forklifts, pickups, single and tandem axle trucks, and aerial lift bucket trucks.
  • Assists in the manufacturing, installation and maintenance of traffic control signs throughout unincorporated Douglas County in accordance with the latest version of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)
  • Assists with the installation of pavement markings throughout unincorporated Douglas County in accordance with the latest version of the MUTCD.
  • Performs routine maintenance and operation of equipment.
  • Performs snow removal and sand/de-icing material applications.
  • Other Duties: Will perform other duties as assigned.


SECONDARY DUTIES:

  • Signing – Learns and applies the fabrication methods, equipment, and materials to be used, the colors and shapes of the signs, i.e. regulatory, warning and guide signs, and the equipment for installation.
  • Striping / Markings – Learns and applies the types of materials (paint, epoxy, thermoplastic, methyl-methacrylate) and specifications for application; the road conditions and temperatures to apply materials; the ability to read blueprints/plans. Requires gaining basic knowledge of striping equipment (trucks, hand machines, and striping removal machines) and how to operate and maintain them; how to set up traffic control for work zones for spot work or safely run a striping train of vehicles per federal/state/local standards; and knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Work Zone Traffic Control – Learns and applies barricade classifications and when to use each type. Be able to read and set up work zones per Part VI of the MUTCD.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under close supervision, often as part of a crew, on daily activities under the direction of the Traffic Services Supervisor.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position does not supervise other employees.


INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT: This position is responsible for maintaining the signs and markings within the public right-of-way, as required by the MUTCD. The training and certifications are required to ensure proper interpretations of traffic engineering recommendations. Improperly operating or placed traffic control devices could result in potential serious safety liability for the county. Citizens rely upon the expertise to ensure their safety and to properly direct them. Without this direction, damage to property, bodily injury or death could occur. Employee awareness and education are vital to the employees' daily responsibilities to ensure citizen, personnel and property safety.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: A high school diploma or GED. Must be at least 18 years of age.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


Knowledge
:

  • Communication: reading, writing, speaking in the English language.
  • Basic knowledge of traffic, signs, markings, equipment maintenance, and safety factors is required.


Skills
:

  • Requires general computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office, including Outlook for email communication.
  • Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Operation of equipment and systems, including vehicles such as forklifts, pickups, single and tandem axle trucks, and aerial lift bucket truck.
  • Operation of electronic devices, including iPad and cell phone.


Abilities
:

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, manuals, operating and maintenance instructions.
  • Ability to apply common sense understating to carry out instructions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in both oral and written form.
  • Ability to apply past knowledge and experience to formulate decisions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. This position has daily contact with county employees, supervisors, the public, other agencies and contractors.


CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS:

  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License upon hire, with complying insurance. Must obtain a Colorado Driver’s License within six (6) months of hire. Review of motor vehicle record is required at time of hire and periodically throughout employment.
  • A CDL Class ‘B’ is preferred. Must obtain CDL Class 'B' within twelve (12) months of hire.
  • Ability to obtain a Colorado Department of Transportation Flaggers Certification Card within six (6) months of hire.
  • Within one and one half (1 ½) years, employee must become familiar with the MUTCD, obtain certification as an ATTSA or IMSA Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control Technician and obtain an IMSA Level I Sign & Markings certification.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:


Physical Work Environment:

  • Work is mostly outdoors. The employee may be exposed to high speed/high volume traffic and adverse weather conditions.
  • Work outside of normal hours is required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to remain available via mobile cellular device/email access during and after normally scheduled business hours.


Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to perform heavy work requiring frequent repetitive lifting of 70# to waist height and occasional lifting of 40# to shoulder height and above.
  • This position also includes frequent climbing with work at heights of 50’ (bucket truck), frequent balancing, bending, squatting, reaching above shoulder height. Occasional reaching overhead, crawling and kneeling.
  • May be required to pass a physical capabilities exam.

In the event of an emergency/disaster in or near the County, all County employees are expected to make every effort to be available to assist the County Manager, Elected/Appointed Officials and Department Directors to ensure the continued operation of any and all necessary County functions. This may mean being available to perform additional duties and hours beyond what is normally required. In the event that an exempt employee does work more than 40 hours a week in support of County operations during an emergency, such employee may receive overtime or other appropriate wage compensation in accordance with existing County policies or at the discretion of the County.
