Job Summary


This is technical and routine work responsible for conducting residential and commercial building inspections to determine compliance with all uniform electrical codes and ordinances. Work involves explaining county building codes and ordinances and corrective requirements to property owners developers contractors and the general public. Work also involves making independent technical decisions enforcing state and county building codes and ordinances. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Duties include but are not limited to: Inspecting electrical wiring in all new and remodeled residential and commercial structures; inspecting wiring for code compliance in burned houses Performing electrical inspections to ensure correct panel sizes uses and sizes of wire number of circuits and number of and locations of switches Checking the licenses of contractors and verifying business registrations when in the field Explaining new building ordinances to property owners developers contractors and the general public; receiving and responding to reports of alleged code and ordinance violations Contacting developers contractors and property owners to schedule inspection of property; issuing inspection tickets upon completion of building or construction inspection; noting code violations and recommendations to correct violations; notifying property owners of results of inspection and explaining necessary corrective requirements Conducting re-inspections to ensure corrective action has been taken; issuing warnings citations and stop-work orders when violations are not corrected Responding to telephone and in-person requests for assistance and information on inspections Preparing and maintaining accurate reports and records regarding inspection activities including a daily log of completed inspections and violations discovered Performing other duties as assigned QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or GED supplemented by college-level or vocational course work in a related field Two to four years of professional experience as an electrical inspector or closely related field An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Minimum 18 years of age Ability and willingness to drive a county vehicle CERTIFICATES LICENSES REGISTRATIONS: Possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License (Class C) and a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR) Possess and maintain a valid State of Georgia Electrical unrestricted license KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of state county and local residential and commercial codes and regulations related to electrical systems Knowledge of the methods and practices involved in constructing installing maintaining and operating a wide variety of electrical systems Knowledge of building materials construction methods and practices and building codes Skill in detecting poor workmanship inferior materials defects faults and hazards of fire and collapse Ability to offer solutions of corrective action for defects and faults Ability to conduct site surveys inspections and tests in order to determine compliance to adopted codes and ordinances; ability to enforce and interpret regulations with firmness tack and impartiality Ability to review and analyze plans and specifications and to read maps and plats Ability to handle stressful or hostile situations with tact and courtesy Ability to interpret and communicate standard building electrical plumbing and mechanical codes Ability to read and comprehend routine instructions short correspondence and memos. Ability to write short reports and correspondence Ability to explain building codes adopted ordinances and other state and federal regulations governing residential and commercial buildings to the public Ability to communicate and interact with the contractors builders and the general public in a professional and courteous manner Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions Salary: $46588.10 annually ($ 22.40 hourly) plus full benefits package Employment Opportunities (Section 13-50) “The recruitment selection appointment and promotion of employees shall be in such a manner as to promote equal employment for all persons without regard to race age color creed religion ancestry gender national origin physical handicap or political affiliation or sexual preference.”
