The Position

For a term of 24 months the incumbent works under the direction of the District Court Judges and/or their designee(s) performing a variety of complex professional legal work, legal research, and legal consultation for the Court and staff; to perform special projects, as assigned; to review court documents and filings for compliance with legal mandates; and to do related work as required. The Clerkship ends after completion of the 24 month term of employment.

Essential Functions

  • Research, study and annotate laws, court decisions, documents, opinions, briefs and related legal authorities to process suits, trials, hearings, appeals and other litigated matters; attend such legal proceedings as required.
  • Read opinions, briefs, and motions and extract excerpts pertinent to points of law and fact.
  • Prepare proposed written orders and legal memoranda including appropriate recommendations to the requesting Judge.
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with judges, supervisors, County employees, elected officials, attorneys, law enforcement, other agencies, and the public.
  • Comply with department policies and laws to create a cooperative, safe, respectful and quality work environment.
  • Assist in the Law Library/Self Help Center when needed.
  • Attend meetings and trainings as required.
  • Report to work with regular, consistent attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and directed.

Education and Work Experience and Other Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school or university and applicants must currently be licensed, or will
    be licensed, to practice law in Nebraska upon the start date.
  • Completion of a pre-employment criminal record check and conditional offer drug screen.
  • Law Review, Law Journal, legal publication article author or editor and/or Moot Court preferred.

  • Work is performed in an office setting during standard day shift hours; however, schedule may vary (e.g. weekends, overtime/extra hours). Noise level is usually quiet. Work may be stressful when dealing with multiple/changing priorities, time constraints, and/or limited resources.
  • Work requires some physical activity, including extended periods of sitting and occasionally standing, walking, kneeling, bending, crouching, reaching, and stooping. Frequent walking, and occasional balancing, kneeling, bending, and reaching. Work also requires the ability to occasionally lift/carry objects weighing up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 25 pounds.
  • Required sensory abilities include vision, hearing and touch. Visual abilities, correctable to normal ranges, include close, distance and color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Communication abilities include the ability to talk and hear within normal ranges. Incumbent must possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computers and other equipment.
