COMPENSATION &BENEFITS:


0-3% Merit upon successful completion of the probationary period and 0-3% annual merit increases thereafter based upon evaluation score.

Responsible for performing skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the care and maintenance of parks, playing fields, campsites and other landscaped and recreation areas; performs weed control activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Mows, trims, edges, fertilizes, and waters parks, playing fields and other landscaped areas; weeds, prunes, mulches, fertilizes, and sprays trees, plants and shrubbery; prepares soil for planting; seeds and re-sods lawn areas; plants trees, seedlings and shrubs; applies pesticides and fertilizers.
  • Installs, repairs and maintains irrigation systems; adjusts, repairs and replaces timing mechanisms. Inspects assigned areas; corrects or reports safety hazards; cleans and maintains park grounds, restrooms, athletic fields, campsites, paved areas and paths; grooms and prepares ball fields and other park facilities.
  • Performs set-ups and tear-downs for special events.
  • Maintains buildings and facilities; empties trash and performs litter control; cleans restrooms, horse stalls, fire pits, storage rooms and shops.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of hand and power landscaping tools and
    equipment, including hand and riding mowers, tractors, spreaders, edgers, blowers, trimmers, chainsaws, rakes, shovels, hoes, brooms and other tools; operates trucks, trailers and tractors with attachments.
  • Cleans lighting fixtures and replaces bulbs/tubes.
  • Empties, cleans and lines waste receptacles and disposes of trash.
  • Performs basic building repair work; may paint facilities and perform graffiti removal; maintains drinking fountains.
  • Performs snow removal tasks; plowing, shoveling, applying ice melt.
  • Maintains vehicles, equipment, materials and supplies in proper condition.
  • Observes safe working practices, including maintaining storage areas in a safe condition.
  • Maintains open communication with coworkers and management.
  • Answers questions and provides standard information to the public.
  • Responds to questions and complaints from the public; collects fees; informs public on rules and regulations or guides them to appropriate resources.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
  • Completes basic records of work performed and materials used utilizing software such as Microsoft Word or Excel, as well as timely completion of time sheets.
  • Drives a County motor vehicle to specified work sites; may operate bucket truck.
  • Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and Experience:

High School diploma/GED; AND one (1) year of horticultural or landscape maintenance experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Must be at least 16 years of age.

Required Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, equipment, and techniques of planting, transplanting, cultivating, pruning and maintaining a variety of lawns, ground cover, plants, shrubs, hedges and trees.
  • Methods, equipment, and techniques used in weed, pest and insect control and treating plant diseases.
  • Methods and materials used in general building and above-ground and underground facilities maintenance and repair work.
  • Operation, capability and maintenance of various trucks and light construction equipment.
  • Basic painting, plumbing, concrete and carpentry methods, tools and techniques.
  • Techniques of cement construction, pouring and finishing.
  • Proper cleaning methods and the safe usage of cleaning materials, disinfectants, custodial tools and equipment. Use and minor maintenance of hand and power tools and equipment. Safety practices and equipment related to the work.
  • Basic shop mathematics.

Skill in:

  • Using, and performing basic maintenance on, various hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Safely using hand tools and power equipment related to the work.
  • Understanding and following written, digital, and oral instructions.
  • Working without close supervision in standard work situations.
  • Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.
  • Reading and interpreting standard plans, maps and instructions.
  • Preparing basic records and reports of work performed in digital and physical forms.
  • Ability to receive, check and responds to communications either in person, in writing, or electronically.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:

  • Current valid Nevada Driver’s License.
  • Nevada Restricted Use Pesticide certification within one (1) year of date of employment.
  • CPR and First Aid certification within six (6) months of date of employment.
  • OSHA 10 Certification within six (6) months of date of employment.

Mobility to work in a typical shop or related maintenance setting, including operating typical trade equipment, hand and power tools and standard office equipment, and to drive a motor vehicle to various work sites; stamina to stand, walk and climb and to work in confined or awkward spaces for an extended period of time; strength to lift and maneuver materials and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds with proper equipment; vision to read printed materials; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over a radio or telephone.

Work is subject to exposure to extreme weather conditions, hazardous chemicals, electrical currents, gases, dust and noxious odors.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.

Retirement – Public Employees' Retirement System of Nevada
Douglas County contributes 33.50% of an eligible Regular Member and 50% of an eligible Police and Fire Member's salary for retirement. Deferred Compensation Plans – Employees can participate in the VOYA Retirement Plans, which is funded by the employee.

Paid Leave
12 paid holidays per year. Generous paid leave accrual's including 96 hours sick annually, begin accruing 120 hours annual leave each year. Health Insurance
The County has rich benefits plans to choose from: Preferred Provider (PPO) and Health Savings Account (HSA) with supplemental benefits to include: prescription plan, dental plan, vision, life insurance opportunities, cancer insurance, and disability insurance. Benefit eligibility is the 1st of the month following 30-day waiting period or 60 days, depending on the position. Compensation
Douglas County's compensation system is based on Pay for Performance wherein employees are eligible for annual performance evaluations. The current structure consists of merit increases up to 3% on a qualifying employee's anniversary and Cost of Living Adjustments based on the Consumer Price Index during the first pay period of each fiscal year. The COLA will be up to 5% depending on the CPI each year. Additionally, eligible employees can be recognized for outstanding performance, above and beyond the call of duty, and receive additional compensation through the Recognition of Excellence Program.
