JOB DESCRIPTION

Maintenance Mechanic

JOB SUMMARY

This position performs skilled work in major mechanical and minor electrical maintenance, adjustments, repair of water/wastewater treatment plants, pump stations, and all related equipment. Work involves operating combination vehicles and single and tandem axle automotive equipment or relatively simple mechanical attachments. May work independently or with other mechanics, laborers, and/or the plant or pump station operators during repair assignments.  An employee in this position is required to be required to be on call on a rotating basis. This position reports to the Maintenance Mechanic Foreman.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Maintains, repairs, adjusts, and performs preventive maintenance on blowers, piping, valves, lubrication systems, generators, heat exchangers, pumps, motors, dry and liquid chemical feed systems, chlorinators, mixing equipment, electrical/electronic controls, gauges, flow meters, and other water/wastewater related equipment, instrumentation, etc.
  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and performs detailed maintenance and repair work on water/wastewater pumps and/or booster stations and auxiliary equipment and performs procedures such as back flushing pumps or adductors, adjusting floats, adjusting and/or installing pump packing or seals.
  • Performs inspections to all machines and pumping stations to ensure proper operation.
  • Provides technical support and consults with employees/contractors on difficult repairs.
  • Installs and maintains wiring and plumbing in treatment plants and pump stations.
  • Records meter readings, records temperature readings on pumps and motors, checks belt condition and tensions, checks equipment vibrations, cleans wet wells, assists in the installation, and maintenance of various types of recording and transmitting instruments.
  • Cleans and paints equipment, pumps, piping, station structures, etc.
  • Operates heavy vehicles, such as service truck with a boom crane, dump truck, backhoe, bobcat, dozer, loader, and combination vehicles.
  • Maintains vehicles, tools, and equipment in proper working order at all times in accordance with standard trade practices, management directives, and established standard operating procedures.
  • Conducts daily, weekly, or periodic rounds to inspect treatment facilities and/or stations for proper operation and maintenance.
  • Supplies ordering information for repair/replacement parts and equipment to supervisor.  
  • Performs other related duties as required/assigned.   

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High School diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and three (3) years of experience in mechanical, electrical, and building maintenance and repair preferred. 

Special Qualifications:

Possession of a valid State of Georgia driver’s license and satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR). Possession of a valid State of Georgia Class “A” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License). Possession of Manual Transmission Endorsement preferred or be able to obtain within six (6) months from date of hire. Possession of Confined Space Entry and Trench Excavation/Safety certificates. Possession of a State of Georgia Wastewater Collection System Operator certificate preferred. Possession of a State of Georgia Water Distribution System Operator certificate preferred. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of county and city streets and locations within WSA’s delivery system.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, standard practices, and tools used in the maintenance and repair of a variety of mechanical and electrical equipment used in water/wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations.
  • Knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment, including circuitry, telemetry and engineering principles, motor controls and machine tolerance.
  • Knowledge of general building materials and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of plumbing and pipefitting skills.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions in the mechanical and electrical maintenance and repair trades.
  • Knowledge of equipment and parts and of vendors and contracts.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics, formulas, and computations.
  • Skill in communication and coordination.
  • Skill in using small power tools and hand tools, such as saws, wrenches, grinders, cutting torches, welders, etc.
  • Skill in mechanical or electrical diagnostic tools.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex written and oral instructions with little detail.
  • Ability to work independently and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the general public.
  • Ability to diagnose operational/mechanical difficulties on a wide variety of water/wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations, and related equipment.
  • Ability to use maintenance manuals to perform maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to establish priorities with appropriate attention, details, and the ability to think through and analyze a problem resulting in the best possible solution.
  • Ability to recognize hazardous or emergency conditions and take necessary safety precautions.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, specifications, and blueprints.
  • Ability to work under varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work overtime with little or no notice.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is very heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
  • Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
  • Fingering: picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand.
  • Hearing: sufficient to perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction; ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound. 
  • Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Mental Acuity: sufficient to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers
  • Standing: particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Talking: sufficient to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Visual Acuity: sufficient to observe violations of codes, to effectively operate standard office equipment; ability to read and write reports, correspondence, instructions, drawings, etc.; and to operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment, by both day and night.
  • Walking: sufficient to move about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or move from one work site to another.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The employee will be exposed to the following conditions in the work environment: hot or cold indoor work environment; dirt, dust, grease, machinery and its moving parts; work in high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals; outdoor weather conditions; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The work is often performed on rough ground and slippery surfaces in and around water. Protective devices such as masks, self-contained breathing apparatus, goggles, gloves, hearing protectors, helmets, and other protective equipment or clothing is often required. The employee may work in conditions with direct contact with raw sewage/water and sewage/water sludge. The noise level in this work environment is usually loud to very loud.
