OVERVIEW
Seasonal Position performs a broad range of inspections in accordance with established standards and regulations under general supervision. Knowledge of construction methods and materials, inspection techniques and procedures, and project administration procedures is preferred. Works closely with contractors, office staff, utility companies, and the public. Supports project design, survey, and construction staff, and supervisors as needed. Responsible for inspection of roadway, drainage, and bridge construction projects and rock crushing operations.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Serves as inspector on projects involving roads, bridges, drainage systems, and structures and assists in inspection and testing of utility and private development projects.
- Ensures conformance of Contractor’s work with project plans and specifications.
- May be the point of contact for the Contractor, property owners, inspectors, and survey team, as needed.
- Performs material testing, scale weighing, ticket taking, and other duties.
- Daily photos of job sites should be taken and organized.
- Complete accurate and timely Inspector Daily Reports and submit with all required documentation.
- Evaluate materials used in construction projects to ensure compliance with specifications.
- Prepare and maintain accurate and complete inspection records and reports and ensure project documentation requirements are met.
- Researches, analyzes, and prepares project estimates, schedules, and correspondence for change orders, requests for information, and other project-related documents.
- Communicates construction procedures, easements, disruptions, and timelines with the general public.
- Attends DOT design, construction, and inspection training.
- Inspect rock crushing operations, assure materials meet County and Washington State standards, and advise contractor of testing results for rock crushing and stockpile operations.
- Assists survey crew in collecting data and construction staking.
- Performs other duties and tasks as directed or assigned.

- Construction inspection, construction equipment, and construction techniques and procedures.
- Construction survey and staking.
- Testing soil, concrete, aggregate, asphalt and BST in accordance with WSDOT Test Methods.
- Working knowledge of road construction techniques, design, materials and drafting; construction inspection, surveying, and equipment; environmental regulations; and permitting requirements.
- Adopt a collaborative and effective approach to both verbal and written communications.
- Perform mathematical computations.
- Evaluate materials used in construction for compliance with plans and specifications.
- Maintain accurate and legible project records.
- Project a positive and professional image and maintain composure working under stressful situations.
- Work to assist project team members in design, survey, and construction when workload allows.
- Remain self-motivated.
- Work under pressure in a high-liability environment.
- Effective communication both verbal and written.
- Familiarity and use of manuals associated with the design, construction, and inspection of projects.
- Familiarity with crushing, paving, and BST operations.
- Working knowledge of aggregate, hot mix asphalt, concrete, and embankment testing for roadway and drainage construction projects.
Supervisory Responsibility
- This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS
- Work is performed primarily in a field setting with extended periods of sitting, standing, bending, kneeling, walking, and lifting (up to 40 pounds waist high).
- Driving, climbing stairs, and walking outdoors on uneven terrain in a variety of weather conditions.
- May work an alternative schedule at the sole discretion of the County.
- Potential for working evenings, occasional weekends, holidays, overtime, and out of town travel.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER RECRUITING REQUIREMENTS
- The County may, at its discretion, consider combinations of education, experience, certifications, and training in lieu of the requirements specified within the job description.
- A valid Washington State Driver’s License is required.
- A background security check may be required if a job offer is made.
