GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Domestic Violence Victim Advocate is responsible for provision of legal advocacy and related services of domestic violence at Dove Inc.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Provides direct services to clients (completes intakes, answers hotline, counseling and case management to non-residential and residential clients of the program. Provides on-call services within the rotation of domestic violence staff. Provides legal advocacy to victims of domestic violence, completes Orders of Protection, and accompanies them to court, informs clients of their rights through IDVA, helps clients navigate through court processes for Orders of Protection and domestic violence criminal cases. Documents information concerning domestic violence criminal cases on the Criminal Case Tracking Form. Contacts victims via sworn statements as needed, attends bond arraignments, preliminary hearings, dispositions, and status hearings concerning domestic violence cases. Provides clients with information and helps with completing forms for Crime Victims’ Rights, Victim Compensation, Victim Impact Statements. Provides emotional support to victims testifying in criminal court. Accompanies clients to meetings with the States’s Attorney regarding criminal cases. Provides training/presentations regarding domestic violence to law enforcement. Documents services provided according to program standards. Attends and participates in required Dove Inc., Domestic Violence Program meetings. Attends and participates in agency and program events. Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

The Domestic Violence Victim Advocate should have two years successful experience in the human services field. Experience in domestic violence fieldpreferred. An academic degree may be substituted for some of the experience.The Victim Advocate should be emotionally mature, sensitive and reliable. TheVictim Advocate should be able to demonstrate skills in counseling victims ofdomestic violence, crisis intervention, problem solving, case management, andtime management. Applicants must be able to perform the following: Lift andcarry 30-50 pounds, sit and/or stand for prolonged periods of time, bend, twist,stoop, or kneel, exhibit manual dexterity, vision correctable to 20/20 orsufficient to complete job responsibilities, including color recognition, hearingcorrectable in order to complete job responsibilities. A valid driver’s license andinsurance is required. Prior to employment, all employees are subjects tobackground and drug checks as required by program grants and the Dove, Inc.Personnel Policy. These checks may be updated periodically.SALARY AND BENEFITSThe introductory salary range is from $32,000-$36,000 annually. Raises areprovided annually based on merit and availability of funding. Fringe benefitsinclude paid holidays, up to 19 paid leave days per year, group health insurance(30 hours per week or more), life insurance, and disability insurance (25 hoursper week or more), direct deposit, matching retirement fund, and an EmployeeAssistance Program.

WORK CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT

The Domestic Violence Victim Advocate works under the supervision of the Domestic Violence Client Services Supervisor. This is a 40 hour per week position. This employment is contingent upon continued funding for this position. The Victim Advocate’s office is located within the DV Shelter. Days worked may include weekends, evenings, and holidays. This position is subject to the requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
