Description

General Summary

The primary purpose of this position is to ensure completion of the activities of the Accounting Department and all functions are completed timely, with accuracy, and in accordance with credit union policies and procedures, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and/or federal laws and regulations. Perform routine accounting functions and special analytics as assigned. Provide guidance and training to the accounting staff in the performance of their duties. 

Essential Functions

Leadership

  • Serve as team lead for department.
  • Assist Controller with financial processes as necessary and work as liaison to management in the Controller absence.

Monthly and Quarterly Close Functions

  • Ensure comprehensive, timely, and accurate completion of all critical tasks, to include payroll, accruals, Fixed Assets, and Prepaid entries. 
  • Assist with the month-end, quarterly, and year-end close of financial data and reporting, including preparation and review of the monthly financial statements. 
  • Prepare monthly financial reports and analyses for presentation to the Asset and Liability Committee and Board.
  • Compile required regulatory data for submission of the NCUA Quarterly Call Report.

General Ledger

  • Resolve general ledger discrepancies. Ensure all balance sheet general ledger accounts, and applicable subsidiary ledgers, are reconciled monthly.
  • Maintain the general ledger chart of accounts.  
  • Assist other departments with accounting research and reconciliation issues.

Budget

  • Research and explain budget variances
  • Provide assistance with the annual budgeting process in coordination with the Controller the Executive Vice President.  

Other Duties

  • Maintain accounting procedures to support efficiency of operations and financial integrity.  
  • Identify inefficient and outdated processes; recommend improvements. Coordinate process improvements with other departments to enhance efficiencies within the organization.  
  • Prepare special financial analyses as required or as requested by the Controller, Executive Vice President, other Executives and/or Board Members.
  • Coordinate the collection of and provide data necessary to support audits/exams, or special projects.
  • Serve as back-up to other accounting functions, as necessary and perform other duties as assigned.


Requirements

Professional, well-developed interpersonal skills necessary for maintaining the integrity of the accounting staff, communication between departments and servicing Credit Union members.

  • Requires working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).  
  • Must analyze complicated factual situations, apply functional principles, and develop solutions.
  • Requires Associates degree in Accounting or a related field.  
  • Requires a minimum of five to ten years of experience in accounting management or other relevant financial position required. 
  • Requires intermediate working knowledge of PC applications (Word, Excel, MS Outlook, Financial Accounting Software).  
  • Advanced mathematical skills required (calculations and concepts involving decimals, percentages, fractions, etc.) along with the ability to translate information into meaningful analysis to target audience.
  • Ability to make decisions in the interest of the credit union and act as liaison with executive staff in the absence of the Controller.
