Job Summary:
The Director of Insurance Accounting oversees of the accounting function for the reinsurance companies. The Director of Insurance Accounting oversees Staff Accountants to completes bank & GL reconciliations & handles general A/P functions for the reinsurance companies. The Director is also responsible for preparing A/R Aging reports and other Financial Reports for the reinsurance companies. The Director is also responsible for planning, organizing and coordinating the year-end close process with internal and external auditors. Ensuring successful completion of the companies’ tax filings.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Prepare reporting for all reserves as well as IBNR & case reserves
- Work with actuaries to review risk per segment and forecast loss ratios
- Prepare reinsurance reporting for various PORC's & ARC's
- Prepare, analyze, and accurately report current month’s financial results to management
- Prepare monthly financial statements, quarterly forecasts, annual operating plan, strategic planning and prepare documents for year-end tax return filing
- Coordinate and direct the preparation of the budget and financial forecasts and report variances
- Ensure quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting
- Submit all financial transactions, transmissions, and reporting on a timely and accurate basis
- Support month-end and year-end close process
- Manage all financial and accounting operations of a growing company
- Monitor all day-to-day accounting activities
- Assure timely, accurate processing of payroll, A/R and A/P
- Establish internal controls for finance and consults with the owner, as necessary
- Collaborate with all staff to identify, establish, and measure internal controls
- Supervise general ledger accounts
- Reconcile all prescribed general ledger accounts monthly and submit to management.
- Manage all accounting operations including Billing, A/R, A/P, GL, and Revenue Recognition
- Manage and comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
- Manage preparation of and review of all local, state, and federal tax filings and retruns
- Research technical accounting issues for compliance
- Coordinate the preparation of regulatory reporting
- Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls
- Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage time effectively in a teamwork environment.
- Ability to work methodically and meet deadlines.
- Other duties will be at the discretion of management.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or related field
- CPA license preferred
- Minimum of 5 years of accounting management experience in the insurance industry, minimum of 2 years at a director level
- Proven leadership capabilities with experience directly managing a team of accountants
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
- Ability to perform reconciliations and validate the accuracy of the information being used
- Willingness to take accountability and initiative
- Excellent computer skills including Strong Excel
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
- Strong critical thinking skills
- Ability to thrive in a complex, dynamic environment.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and Accounting software
- Experience building internal relationships and working across a highly matrixed organization
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time.
