Job Description:
- PURPOSE OF JOB:
Provides direct patient care and performs selected therapeutic interventions and diagnostic procedures under the direction of the Registered Nurse.
- ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provides safe and efficient direct patient care with consideration for age-specific accommodations.
- Collaborates with patients, families, and health care team members in order to achieve excellence in patient care.
- Promotes patient safety through adherence to protocols, policies, procedures, evidence-based guidelines and Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals.
- Actively participates in and supports departmental and organizational quality initiatives and goals.
- Maintains clinical competency according to unit-specific standards.
III. JOB CRITERIA AND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
- Provides safe and efficient direct patient care with consideration for age-specific accommodations.
- Provides/assists patients physically by providing physical support through pushing, pulling, lifting, reaching, turning, kneeling, standing, sitting and balancing, and psychologically by providing emotional intervention.

- Responds appropriately in a critical situation, ie: code, respiratory compromise, falls, seizures.
- Demonstrates appropriate skill in utilization of the computer for documentation, point of care results, data retrieval, and communication, ensuring that no unapproved abbreviations are used.
- Assists in the admission, transfer and discharge process.
- Assures patient room is stocked and prepared for patient admission.
- Completes patient belonging checklist, sends and retrieves valuable items from security
- Orients patient to room, call bell, and routine
- Assists with packing and unpacking belongings
- Insures that patient items such as hearing aids, dentures, glasses or prosthesis are transferred
- Demonstrates competence in technical skills and selected therapeutic interventions and diagnostic procedures:
- Vital signs
- Intake and output
- Point of care testing (hemoccult, accudata, nasal swabs)
- Hot and cold applications
- Abdominal binders, antiembolism stockings, and ace bandages
- Traction, support and mobility devices/orthotics, prosthetics, and gait training equipment
- Soft limb restraints and mitts, under direction of RN
- Specimen collection (i.e. urine, stool, sputum), use of mobile lab
- Phlebotomy (venipuncture and capillary) per unit requirement
- 12 lead EKG
- Demonstrates initiative, self-direction and accountability in completion of assigned responsibilities in accordance with department needs.
- Collaborates with patients, families, and health care team members in order to achieve excellence in patient care.
- Participates in patient/family education as appropriate to level of training and practice, and with consideration for the patients ability to understand and respond
- Consistently and continuously communicates, pertinent information regarding changes in patient status and patient care to patient care team members including skin breakdown, accudata blood sugars, vital signs, intake and output, etc.
- Demonstrates initiative in offering assistance to other team members
- Uses interpersonal communication techniques that show a willingness to accept and give constructive feedback for the purpose of promoting professional excellence within the unit.
- Effectively communicates pertinent patient/significant other information during shift to shift report utilizing walking rounds and according to department standards.
- Informs and involves the patient and family prior to interventions or care being performed.
- Consistently seeks direction and clarification of patient care needs and team responsibilities.
- Follows staffing guidelines of the unit. In the interest of patient care, responds to emergent or critical needs within the Patient Services Team by cooperating with staff rotation and reassignment to other departments when necessary.
- Promotes patient safety through adherence to protocols, policies, procedures, evidence-based guidelines and Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals.
- Maintains safety precautions while providing patient care including infection control isolation, patient/bed positioning, side rails, restraint utilization, skin care, patient/specimen transport, physical environment, fall prevention, seizure precautions, and work injury prevention.
- Performs one to one observation on patients as directed by nurse per policy.
- Maintains equipment in good working order, reports equipment failure, and initiates corrective action. Where appropriate, adheres to defined computer generated quality monitoring or procedures for validation of equipment functionality.
- Demonstrates recognition of equipment or technological adaptations dependent upon age-specific patient needs.
- Safely handles body fluids using knowledge of appropriate standard precautions.
- Consistently utilizes 2 patient identifiers before performing any diagnostic or therapeutic intervention.
- Actively participates in and supports departmental and organizational quality initiatives and goals.
- Identifies professional goals, which reflect own strengths and weaknesses and seeks assistance for improvement of performance.
- Attends and participates in meetings according to department standards.
- Supports and participates in department, hospital, and evidenced based care quality initiatives
- Participates as a team member or in workgroups on department, hospital and/or evidence based care quality initiatives.
- Maintains clinical competency according to unit-specific standards.
- Demonstrates competency in maintaining specific technological skills required by job category and/or specialty area. Demonstrates recognition of equipment or technological adaptations dependent on age-specific patient needs (See Scope of Practice as delineated in departmental standards and/or related Policy and Procedure in the Policy and Procedure Manual).
- Maintains technological competence through practice and ongoing participation in inservices and formalized professional conferences.
Acquires and maintains proficiency in EKG's and phlebotomy as applicable.
Job Qualifications:
V. QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education:
1. High school or GED completion
2. Certified Nursing Assistant documentation for Certified PCT position. Must maintain current Pennsylvania license.
B. Experience:
1. Hospital experience preferred
2. Phlebotomy and ECG experience preferred
C. Other Skills:
1. Certified in B.L.S. for health care providers
2. Excellent interpersonal and team building skills
