The Paralegal provides corporate legal, administrative, and clerical support to the General Counsel and Legal Department. Success in this role requires the employee to be proactive, meet deadlines, and communicate effectively. The primary administrative duties and responsibilities include organizing daily calendars and scheduling meetings, creating reports, supporting the company's document retention and tracking initiatives, facilitating internal communication, improving and troubleshooting staff processes and activities, and reviewing and recommending changes to company policies. The primary activities in supporting the General Counsel include initial document drafts; document processing; developing case information; tracking cases and matters; preparing and transmitting filings and certificates of service; legal research; special projects; and providing support during investigations, litigation, arbitration, and administrative hearing proceedings.

Starting Salary Range
: $106,951- $132,087.00
This is an in-person position located in Fairbanks, Alaska

What you will do
  • Perform office and administrative duties to assist management, such as managing calendars, organizing files and making complex travel, meeting and event arrangements.
  • Create, edit and proofread letters, legal documents, and memos.
  • Lead or assist with large projects that may include Company presentations for internal or external purposes, and Company initiatives.
  • Prepare reports.
  • Attend meetings and take detailed notes.
  • Track department metrics.
  • Assist with Vendor vetting.
  • Support document retention and organization efforts of the Company, including placing materials into SharePoint.
  • Maintain department files.
  • Maintain familiarity with the department’s time management software.
  • Assist with limited distribution document marking as applicable.
  • Answer incoming and placing outgoing calls.
  • Assist in all civil or regulatory litigation matters handled internally or by outside counsel.
  • Keep departments informed by maintaining contact and communicating matter progress.
  • Assist in corporate transactions, including monitoring contract review and drafting requests and preparing initial drafts of corporate filings. Complete legal department filings, including electronic filings.
  • Conduct legal research and assist with factual investigations.
  • Special review and drafting projects as assigned.
  • Monitor state, local, and other corporate filing requirements, licensing, and renewals as applicable.
  • Prepare documents and correspondence for review and signature by General Counsel.
  • Organize and prepare responses to discovery and information requests.
  • Exercise good judgment and discretion, and maintain strict confidence.
  • Keep cases organized by establishing and organizing files; monitoring calendars; meeting deadlines; documenting actions; inputting information into file database; confirming case status with attorney.
  • Support case preparation by preparing case summaries and materials for mediation conferences; preparing, monitoring and obtaining discovery responses; and organizing materials for team case review.
  • Enhance hearing proceedings by organizing evidence; preparing exhibits; scheduling witnesses; ensuring that witnesses are ready when needed; taking courtroom notes.
  • May conduct initial witness interviews and prepare interview notes.

Conditions of Employment

Must pass a pre-employment drug test, random drug test thereafter in accordance with the published policy of Doyon Utilities. Must have a valid driver's license issued by the State of Alaska. Must be eligible to work on a military installation in Alaska. Eligibility to work on a military installation includes compliance with Department of Defense mandates with respect to employee background and health directives.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent Required
  • Associate's Degree College level courses in business, paralegal studies, and/or computer science. Experience may be substituted. Required
  • 4 years Experience with progressively increasing responsibilities in a professional office environment, 2 years of which was obtained via employment with a corporate or governmental legal department, or a private law firm, as a paralegal, legal intern, or law clerk. Required
  • Some experience Civil, criminal, or administrative litigation support experience. Required
  • Some experience Online legal research software. Required
  • 2 years Experience supporting at least 1 of the following: construction, utilities, environmental, human resources, risk management, and/or corporate governance activities. Preferred
  • Skills with standard office software including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Adobe. (High proficiency)
