Wound Care Nurse - RN III

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking an experienced and dynamic Wound Nurse, Registered Nurse III. The Wound Nurse provides direct care to patients aged 18-100 with chronic medical issues, sometimes experiencing acute exacerbations, and needing consistent nursing care due to diminished capabilities in activities of daily living (ADLs). Responsibilities include assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating both direct and indirect patient care needs. The Wound Nurse also supervises and guides other staff in wound care, adhering to Lemuel Shattuck Hospital's Wound Care Guidelines, and ensures proper documentation and follow-up on wound assessments and treatments.

Hours: Monday-Friday, 7am-3:30pm, working one weekend per month

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):
  • Develop and implement wound care plans using pertinent patient information.
  • Assess and recommend wound treatment per hospital guidelines.
  • Collaborate with LIPs to update wound care guidelines routinely.
  • Document wound assessments based on follow-ups, consults, and as needed.
  • Participate in weekly wound rounds and follow up on wound consults.
  • Audit wound treatment and documentation; recommend improvements.
  • Educate and communicate with interdisciplinary teams on wound care.
  • Maintain certification and stay current on wound care trends.
  • Collaborate to develop inclusive patient care plans.
  • Provide comprehensive documentation including assessments and progress notes.
  • Communicate patient information to healthcare professionals.
  • Ensure optimal wound care practices in collaboration with Quality Department.
  • Delegate, assist, and supervise other staff appropriately.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities.
  • Provide direct care to patients with chronic medical and nursing needs.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for individual patients.
  • Execute physician's orders and participate in nursing reports.
  • Assist in orientation of new personnel and use supplies cost-consciously.
  • Attend educational seminars to maintain licensure and professional development.
Required Qualifications:
  • Understand theories of Nursing Practice.
  • Know specific medical diagnoses and treatments.
  • Be familiar with standards of practice.
  • Comprehend laws and regulations concerning patient rights.
  • Assign and supervise nursing staff appropriately.
  • Assess patients' needs and evaluate nursing personnel skills.
  • Meet the physical demands of the position.
  • Communicate effectively.
  • Complete meaningful documentation.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Sensitivity to the needs of elderly and long-term care patients
  • Familiarity with hospital policies, procedures, and regulations
  • Awareness of external regulating agencies such as DPH and JCAHO
  • Understanding of restorative and rehabilitation nursing
  • Adherence to safety procedures in the hospital
  • Leadership ability; charge responsibilities
  • Yearly CPR certification

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital’s services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.

Located in the heart of Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients.

The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility, and (B) six months of which must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.*

  • Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.

Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.

Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate’s years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division’s Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range
