Job Summary
We are seeking a friendly and detail-oriented Optical Technician/Non-licensed Optician to help our patients get the glasses or contacts they need. In this role, you will obtain customer data and insurance information, verify insurance coverage, and explain out-of-pocket costs to the customer. For glasses wearers, you will explain the differences between different kinds of lenses and help them choose flattering glasses frames. Once they have selected their products, you will enter their choices and prescription into the system to place their order and communicate how long it will take for completion and delivery. You will also help adjust and clean customer glasses to make sure they fit properly.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Optical Technician/Non-licensed Optician fits patients for eyeglasses and contact lenses and help them select which frames and lenses to buy.
Duties
- Receive patients’ prescriptions for eyeglasses or contact lenses
- Measure patients’ eyes and faces, such as the distance between their pupils
- Help patients choose eyeglass frames and lens treatments that best fit their vision needs and lifestyle
- Create work orders for the optical laboratory
- Adjust, repair, and replace eyewear
- Assist patients with inserting and removing contact lenses
- Educate patients about caring for eyewear
The Optical Technician/Non-licensed Optician is responsible for reviewing the patient’s prescription written by the doctor which has information about the eyeglasses and contact lenses patients need. The optician will also help patients select eyewear based on the customer’s prescription, lifestyle, and other factors.
The Optical Technician/Non-licensed Optician measures the patient’s face and head using a variety of computerized or manual tools, such as a pupillary distance ruler, to ensure the eyewear will fit properly. After finalizing a patient’s selections, the Optical Technician/Non-licensed Optician creates a work order to send to an outside lab. Work orders provide specifications on how lenses need to be cut and fabricated with the selected frames.
The Optical Technician/Non-licensed Optician will also assist patients with details related to the finished product, such as adjusting eyeglasses for precise fit and ensuring proper insertion or removal of contact lenses. Other duties may include setting up, organizing, and cleaning product displays.
In addition, the Optical Technician/Non-licensed Optician will be responsible for maintaining sales records, interpreting patients’ prescriptions, preparing invoices, and ordering and maintaining inventory.
