What’s the Difference Between a Buyer and a Purchasing Agent?
We want to be clear about the nature of this position. Unlike a Buyer, who focuses on replenishing existing stock and managing day-to-day inventory levels, a Purchasing Agent plays a more strategic role — selecting new products, sourcing vendors, negotiating pricing, and managing the overall supplier strategy to maximize value and efficiency across our supply chain.
What You’ll Do
- Identify, evaluate, and select new products to expand our catalog of over 7,000 SKUs
- Source and develop relationships with suppliers across a wide range of industries
- Negotiate pricing, terms, and delivery agreements with vendors
- Analyze industry trends, customer needs, and historical sales data to drive purchasing decisions
- Review product performance, manage discontinuations, and recommend alternatives
- Partner with managers and executives to ensure product availability and performance
- Continuously improve supplier performance in terms of cost, quality, and service
- Help standardize and streamline our buying process for long-term scalability
What We’re Looking For
- 3 years of experience in a purchasing, procurement, or strategic sourcing role
- Strong negotiation and vendor management skills
- Experience working with high SKU counts and multi-industry product lines
- Analytical mindset with the ability to identify opportunities for cost savings or product improvements
- Proficiency with purchasing systems, ERP tools, and Sage
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects
- Must be located near Franklin, IN or willing to commute
Nice to Have
- Experience working in construction supply, wholesale distribution, or related industries
- Familiarity with ERP systems or purchasing software
- Understanding of seasonal trends in inventory and demand forecasting
- Experience introducing new products into established operations
- Familiarity with category management or demand planning principles
What We Offer
- Health insurance
- Paid time off and holidays
- Retirement plan options
- A supportive, team-oriented work culture
- Long-term growth opportunities in a rapidly growing company
If you’re a strategic thinker who thrives on building smart vendor relationships and making data-driven product decisions, join Drainage Solutions Inc. and help us build the next phase of our success!
