Software and Communications Engineering Manager
The Software and Communications Engineering Manager will lead the development, integration, and maintenance of software and firmware solutions for field devices with advanced communication, designed for data acquisition in the natural gas industry. This role requires a balance of technical expertise, managerial leadership, and cross-functional collaboration to ensure products meet industry regulations, security standards, and customer requirements.
The position is responsible for managing a team of Firmware and Software Developers, overseeing product development lifecycles, and bridging technical and commercial discussions with both internal and external stakeholders. This role serves as the primary interface between Engineering, Marketing, and Customers to ensure software and firmware align with business objectives and market needs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
These duties include but are not limited to :
Lead the design, development, and maintenance of software and firmware solutions for field devices in natural gas applications.
Oversee system architecture, ensuring seamless integration between firmware, software, and hardware for optimized device performance.Ensure compliance with TSA mandates, cybersecurity standards, and industry regulations for secure data transmission.Drive continuous improvement in software development, testing methodologies, version management, and product launch processes.Work closely with Mechanical and Electrical Engineers to maintain system compatibility and optimize product design.Strategic CollaborationAct as the primary liaison between Engineering and Marketing, translating customer needs into clear technical requirements.
Communicate project status, risks, and timelines effectively to marketing, senior leadership, and cross-functional teams.Partner with sales and business development teams to align technical capabilities with commercial strategies.Assist in product roadmap planning, feature prioritization, and market positioning based on customer feedback and industry trends.Customer and Stakeholder EngagementRepresent the company in customer discussions, bridging technical and commercial topics to ensure clarity and alignment.
Translate complex technical information into digestible insights for non-technical stakeholders, including customers, executives, and sales teams.Conduct customer site visits to understand operational challenges, gather feedback, and ensure product adoption.Foster relationships with key industry partners, regulatory bodies, and technology providers to stay ahead of market trends.LeadershipManage and mentor a team of software and firmware engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and accountability.
Oversee resource allocation, performance reviews, and professional development opportunities for team members.Collaborate with external vendors and contractors as needed to supplement development efforts.Establish and enforce best practices in Agile development, DevOps, and secure coding practices.REQUIRED SKILLS
Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field (ABET-accredited preferred); MBA is a strong complement.Proven leadership experience managing software and firmware development teams.Strong technical expertise in C / C , embedded systems, and wireless communication protocols (e.g., LTE, ZigBee, MODBUS, TCP / IP).Experience with IoT technologies such as IEEE 802.15.4, NFC, Bluetooth LE, Wireless M-Bus.Proficiency in software configuration management tools, defect tracking tools, and version control (GIT).Experience developing secure software solutions compliant with TSA mandates and cybersecurity best practices.Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders effectively.Strong project management skills, capable of handling multiple projects while meeting deadlines.Experience working in cross-functional teams, collaborating with hardware engineers, marketing, and business leadership.Willingness to travel (~15-25%) to customer sites and industry events.Desired : Experience designing natural gas applications.Dresser is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
