Job Summary

Directs the Athletic Communications team. Promotes and enhances the image of Drury University Athletics through media relations, public relations, social media, and web communications. This position plays a strategic role in shaping the department’s communication policies and long-term strategies. This position serves as the senior athletic point person for collaborative communication efforts on the Drury University Campus.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Develops and executes comprehensive integrated communications and marketing strategies for the department of athletics; manages overall departmental messaging; sets up systems, standards, and protocols; leads and mentors the staff, student workers and game workers, providing opportunities and coaching in professional development; partners with internal campus departments, including Marketing and Communications, to align athletic communications with college-wide initiatives.
  • Promotes and enhances the image of Drury Athletics. Markets, publicize, and promotes Drury Athletics and its events through news release, feature stories, emails, web communications and phone calls with the goal of increasing positive exposure for Drury; serves as the primary contact and handles media relations duties (requests, interview schedules, etc.) for the athletic administrations and all NCAA sports. Serves as the primary communications contact with the conference and NCAA media relations offices; serves as the leader of the department’s overall messaging and spokesperson for the athletics department when appropriate, and develops and enhances relationship with key stakeholders and media outlets.
  • Maintains website and departmental communications pieces- directs the communications function and content on drurypanthers.com working to develop and improve overall content of the site regularly; leads the creation graphics and generate fresh content for web sue; gathers photos for website and various communications/social platforms; and serves as backup for other staff members’ web needs.
  • Publications Production: supervises production (writing, editing, design) of publications including game programs, media guides, the main athletics website, annual reports, etc.; works in conjunction with marketing and communication on scheduling video production and content for select sports; and oversees the quality and consistency of all publications.
  • Supervises, coordinates, and oversees media relations for all home and away contests and events, press conferences, photo days and media days; serves as point media relation contact for Drury-hosted conference and national championship events; develops relationships with and serves as the department’s contact with local and national media outlets.
  • Supervisors, coordinates, and oversees all livestream broadcasts and productions.
  • Sport supervision as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Assistant Athletic Director Education And Experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree in related area is required, a corresponding Graduate degree is preferred.
  • At least five years of progressively responsible experience in college sports media relations, media coverage, social and digital media, web communications and writing communications.
  • Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Associate Athletic Director Education And Experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree in related area is required, a corresponding Graduate degree is preferred.
  • 8 years of experience in media relations, media coverage, social and digital media, web communications, and writing communications.
  • Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervises the coaches of assigned sports and other staff as assigned by the Vice President and Director of Athletics. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
