Job Description / Essential Elements :

DRY CREEK JOINT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT

JOB TITLE : Speech Therapist

DESCRIPTION OF BASIC RESPONSIBILITIES :

To identify, diagnose, and provide remediation for students, kindergarten through 8th grade, who have oral communication handicaps.

SUPERVISOR : Principal

TYPICAL DUTIES :

1. Provide individual and group speech and language therapy, according to District established standards.

2. Evaluate student progress according to prescribed speech and language testing procedures by District personnel who have come into contact with the student in a learning situation.

3. Prepare written progress reports on each student for mid-year and end-of-year evaluations.

4. Hold group and individual parent conferences throughout the year to help parents develop a better understanding of the speech handicaps of their children and of the goals of the District speech program.

5. Provide a suitable learning environment and experience which attempts to enhance student attitudes regarding their speech handicaps and best utilize available instructional time.

6. Plan short and long-range goals to meet the needs of each individual student's IEP.

7. Screen and identify students with oral communication handicaps according to

prescribed standards.

8. Refer students having organic difficulties such as voice disorders, mouth breathing, and hearing disabilities to the District Nurse.

9. Notify teachers and administrators of identified speech and hearing handicapped students, and develop an efficient schedule for working with such students.

10. Utilize outside agencies and services as general resources and for specific cases requiring professional services beyond the level of the District speech program.

11. Maintains competence and awareness of current developments in the field of speech, hearing, and language therapy through participation in professional educational activities, meetings, and conferences.

12. Communicate regularly with staff regarding new information, materials, methods, and research encountered.

13. Perform basic attendance accounting including all required District and state reports.

14. Cooperate with other staff in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.

15. Participate in faculty meetings and help develop a better understanding of speech and language handicapped students and their programs for improvement.

16. Participate in child study meetings concerning children enrolled in the speech and language program.

17. Provide student speech and language evaluations for child study assessment when requested.

18. Assist with coordination of services with the County Office.

19. Recommend and facilitate contact with community agencies and serve as liaison as appropriate.

20. Perform other duties similar to the above in scope and function as required and as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Valid School Speech Therapist Credential or equivalent.
  • Five (5) years experience as School Speech Therapist preferred.
  • Master's Degree from an accredited college or university preferred.
  • Valid California driver's license.
  • Pass a pre-employment physical examination to be administered by District-approved medical practitioner at no cost to the applicant.

MEDICAL CATEGORY I :

Light Physical Effort

1. Normally located in a work environment with light physical qualifications and requirements.

2. Ability to lift 25 lbs. maximum or carry any object weighing up to 15 lbs.

    A valid California Speech-Language Pathology Credential is required.
