SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
A Concrete Finisher’s duties include placing, finishing, and protecting and repairing concrete. Concrete Finishers are responsible for setting the concrete forms and ensuring they have the correct depth and pitch. Concrete Finishers place, smooth, and finish surfaces of poured concrete using a variety of hand and power tools. Concrete Finishers spread concrete to specified depth and workable consistency.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Level, smooth, and shape surfaces of freshly poured concrete using straight edge and float or power screed
- Finish concrete surfaces using power trowel, broom, swirl, or wets and rubs concrete with abrasive stone to impart finish
- Remove rough or defective spots from concrete surfaces using power grinder or chisel and hammer and patches holes
- Molds expansion joints and edges using edging tools, jointers, and straight edge
- Control joints layout depth using saws to cut expansion joints
- Finishes wet surfaces to grade on all types of concrete work requiring a fine finish
- Set the forms that hold concrete to the desired pitch and depth, and align them
- Check the forms that hold the concrete to see that they are properly constructed
- Monitor how the wind, heat, or cold affect the curing of the concrete throughout the entire process
- Cut out damaged areas, drill holes for reinforcing rods, and position reinforcing rods to repair concrete using power saw and drill
- Install anchor bolts, steel plates, door sills, and other fixtures in freshly poured concrete and/or pattern or stamp the surface to provide a decorative finish
- Wet surface to prepare for bonding, fill holes and cracks with grout or slurry, and smooth using trowel
- Hand roll curb and gutter
- Direct the casting of the concrete and supervise laborers who use shovels or special tools to spread it
- Profound knowledge of safe work practices including safety precautions for operating power equipment, working in traffic, and under hazardous conditions
- Ability to work as a team member and foster a cooperative work environment
QUALIFICATIONS (Skills, Knowledge, Experience)
- At least one year of experience as a skilled cement finisher or completion of a recognized apprenticeship in this work (other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted)
- Read simple plans, make measurements, and set up forms preparatory to pouring and finishing
- Understand and follow verbal and written instructions
- Must be familiar with the duties of other craft workers and the materials, tools, and machinery they use
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in construction
- Adept at establishing relationships with all parties involved in the construction process to facilitate harmonious working relationships during projects
- Operate trucks and equipment related to concrete repair in a skillful and safe manner
- Able to work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others
- Travel across rough, rocky, or uneven surfaces at construction sites
- Possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record
