Job Summary
The Middle School Band Teacher is responsible for developing and directing a comprehensive instrumental music program for students in grades 6th-8th. The teacher will foster a love for music, develop students’ technical skills, and create an inclusive and engaging learning environment.
Key ResponsibilitiesInstruction & Curriculum Development
- Develop and implement a dynamic band curriculum that aligns with district, state, and national music education standards.
- Teach students instrumental techniques, music theory, and ensemble performance skills.
- Select age-appropriate and diverse musical literature for instruction and performances.
- Incorporate a variety of teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles.
Program Development & Student Engagement
- Direct middle school band ensembles, including concert band, jazz band, and small ensembles.
- Organize and prepare students for school concerts, festivals, and community performances.
- Encourage student participation in solo and ensemble competitions, honor bands, and other extracurricular music opportunities.
Classroom & Behavior Management
- Establish a positive, structured, and supportive classroom environment.
- Set clear expectations for behavior and participation to promote a culture of respect and collaboration.
- Use effective classroom management strategies to maximize student engagement and learning.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with school administration, staff, and parents to support student success.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, and the school community regarding student progress and performance opportunities.
- Collaborate with other music educators in the district to ensure program continuity and growth.
Administrative & Professional Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, progress, and performance assessments.
- Oversee instrument inventory, repairs, and budget management for the band program.
- Participate in professional development opportunities and stay current with best practices in music education.
QualificationsEducation & Certification
- Bachelor’s degree in Music Education or a related field.
- Valid GA teaching certification in Music (or eligibility to obtain certification).
Skills & Experience
- Prior experience in instrumental music instruction, preferably at the middle school level.
- Proficiency in conducting and teaching various wind, brass, and percussion instruments.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills to build and maintain a successful band program.
- Passion for music education and a commitment to fostering student growth and appreciation for music.
