About the Job
Dudek is seeking a mid- to senior-level coastal planner to join our Coastal Planning Team, which consists of former California Coastal Commission (CCC) staff. For over 15 years, our specialized coastal practice has provided services in CCC Coastal Development Permit (CDP) application processing, hearing support, and condition compliance; CCC appeal and enforcement actions; Local Coastal Program (LCP) certification and amendments; Public Works Plan (PWP) implementation; federal consistency reviews; sea level rise and coastal hazard planning; environmental documentation; public outreach; and overall project planning in California’s coastal zone.
We integrate our deep knowledge of California coastal laws, policy interpretation, and procedures with sound science and engineering as well as a clear understanding of community values and concerns. We proactively identify issues and draw on our positive, long-term working relationships with CCC staff to help public and private sector clients throughout the state achieve their project goals.
This full-time position may be based at one of the following California offices: San Diego, Encinitas, San Juan Capistrano, Pasadena, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, or Oakland.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct consistency analysis for an array of projects/plans based on the California Coastal Act, LCP policies, California Code of Regulations, and CCC practices
- Prepare/process CDP applications and LCP submittals
- Coordinate with CCC staff and manage projects, including scopes, budgets, schedules, and client communication
- Work collaboratively with Dudek’s statewide coastal planners and support other groups within Dudek working on projects in the coastal zone
- Monitor recent trends in coastal and land use planning at the local and state level
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, Planning, or a related field
- At least three years of professional California coastal planning experience (as CCC staff or equivalent local government/agency experience)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Experience building relationships and working with diverse stakeholders on controversial coastal issues
- Ability to take initiative and work independently
Preferred Qualifications
- A Master’s degree is strongly encouraged
- Marketing experience, including development of proposals, participation in interviews, and successful contract negotiations is highly desired
