Essential Functions: The instructional assistant is responsible to the general and/or special educators with whom he or she work for daily consultation and direction as immediate supervisor, and, through those teachers, to the building principal and /or assistant principal for assignments and evaluations.Responsibilities: Ability to work well with teachers and students. Familiarity with school and classroom routines and duties is helpful. An understanding of child development and the ability to work with children of varying abilities are essential skills. Ability to develop skills to work with students with social/emotional or behavioral disabilities; including verbal de-escalation and crisis intervention.
Ability to develop skills to work with students with intellectual and physical disabilities - including toileting and hygiene.At his/her school, and in accordance with the provisions of the Massachusetts General Laws, the instructional assistants duties shall include but are not limited to the following: 1.Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully certified teachers2.Assists in all regular and special needs instructional programs for students, as assigned: Conducts modified teacher-planned lessons with small groups of children and/or individuals under the supervision of a general or special educatorPerforms daily classroom routines and duties as directedSupports and implements discipline philosophy of the building and individual classrooms.Meets regularly with the general and/or special educator to discuss students progress and plans for necessary modificationsWorks as necessary with students outside of the regular classroom setting under the direct supervision of the teacher3.Participates in in-service training programs and/or workshops as assigned4. Supervises students in instructional and non-instructional activities as assigned, to include, but not limited to: Arrival and dismissal dutiesLunchroom and recess dutiesField tripsClassroom coverage for teachers attending meetingsClassroom housekeepingReading to studentsClassroom directions, skill-building practice activities, behavior and work habits, and in related activitiesMaintaining homework notebooksPersonal health and safety protocols, which may include diaper changingPerforms other duties as assigned
