Electrical Engineer III / Senior Electrical Engineer - Oconee Nuclear Station - Electrical Systems Engineer

Summary

This job posting for an Electrical Systems Engineer supporting the Operations Support Engineering - Electrical (OSE-E) team at the Nuclear Engineer III or Senior Nuclear Engineer level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. The candidate will support the Oconee Nuclear Station (ONS), located in Seneca, South Carolina, within the Duke Energy Nuclear Fleet.

  • The ONS Operations Support Engineering - Electrical team provides the station focal point for maintaining Equipment Reliability of power generation and distribution systems by monitoring system health and performance, identifying, and resolving equipment issues and advocating for short and long-term performance improvement plans.
  • The candidate will be expected leverage technical expertise to effectively balance support of Operations, Maintenance, Outage Activities, Long-term system improvements and equipment performance monitoring to optimize equipment reliability, with an unwavering commitment to ensuring safe plant operation.
  • Nuclear Engineer III is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve more complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied.
  • Senior Nuclear Engineer is the career / senior level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level manage work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. They are fully competent in use of concepts and procedures. They identify problems, develop solutions, and take actions to resolve. Senior Engineer represents a level at which career may stabilize for many years.

Depending upon the desired qualifications of the successful applicant, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position at a higher level within the job hierarchy.

Basic / Required Qualifications

Nuclear Engineer III

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • A Master 's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering
  • 4-6 years of engineering experience
  • Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience
  • Sr Nuclear Engineer

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • A Master's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited school will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer
  • Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience
  • Responsibilities

  • Serving as the site subject matter expert for the assigned electrical systems.
  • Monitoring and trending system / component performance.
  • Interfacing with external vendors to ensure technical issues are properly resolved.
  • Directing onsite testing and troubleshooting activities for emergent issues.
  • Coordinating cross functionally with other departments (such as Design Engineering, Maintenance & Operations) to ensure system concerns, schedules, budgeting, and related issues are properly addressed.
  • Ensuring regulatory compliance is maintained for NRC and industry standards.
  • Evaluates Fleet Operating Experience and industry learnings to improve Equipment Reliability.
  • Evaluating preventative maintenance (PM) program performance and recommending performance-based adjustments.
  • Additional engineering responsibilities may be assigned based on team needs and individual experience.
  • Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Ten years of utility engineering experience
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer.
  • Experience in the nuclear industry.
  • Proficient in Electrical Engineering theories and principles.
  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of power generation equipment.
  • Familiarity with compliance with NERC standards
  • Expertise in relaying / protection
  • Expertise in switchyard operations and maintenance
  • Expertise in Medium and Low Voltage Breaker maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Proficient in the practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Ability to interact with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Proficient in principles of project management.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Specific Requirements

  • Nuclear Plant unescorted access
  • This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
  • Occasional work during nights and weekends or extended workdays may be necessary to support nuclear regulatory compliance, unit outages, or emergent equipment issues.
  • Working Conditions

  • Hybrid Mobility Classification : Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
  • Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation.
