Job Summary

The Commercial and Industrial Operations Manager I OR II position has single point accountability under general direction of the Director of Operations. This position is responsible for managing all aspects of project operations to ensure project success factors are met. These include but not limited to system availability, all aspects of maintenance (Preventative, Corrective, Predictive, Planned Corrective), cost, contractor and vendor oversight, environmental, safety, communications, security, and reporting.

The position level is defined by complexity of projects assigned as well as expected and delivered contributions to support development of the Operations team, process, and tools used across the Energy Services Operations organization. Typical responsibilities include technical depth of understanding, contribution to more complex projects, and include leadership expectations to be active and vocal in enhancing the department's objectives and initiatives. This can include stepping up to take on special assignments.

The position is accountable for a portfolio of assigned projects with varying levels of risk that impact the organization, Senior Management, and Energy Services customers. PM level may be assigned projects with specific risk-informed requirements based on specific experience and skill sets.

This position will serve as a unifying agent providing leadership, decision making, management, guidance, coordination, and control of overall projects in accordance with established policies, procedures, systems, and requirements of the Company.

Entry to either Operations Manager level is based on experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, and should align with business unit personnel needs to manage the portfolio.

Responsibilities

System Knowledge and Performance

  • Operations Managers are responsible for understanding overall system designs, equipment used, sequence of operation, monitoring, oversight, delegation, and coordination with various internal and external organizations providing services to the system operations of the assigned projects. (This can include understanding of controls, protection systems, contractor and vendor oversight, contracts associated with assigned sites, EHS, QA/OC, diagnostics, communications, stakeholder engagement, regulatory, security, etc.).

  • Operations Managers coordinate and collaborate with contractors, vendors, and suppliers daily to manage preventive and corrective maintenance and operation of Duke Energy Services systems.

  • The Operations Manager shall use the Maintenance Management Tool (MMT) to track all maintenance activities including preventive and corrective. This includes scheduling, verifying completion with contractors and vendors, and recording completion timing of maintenance activities.

Establish and maintain communications among project stakeholders

  • Structure, lead, or assist in project related meetings to ensure open communication with key stakeholders including Duke Energy Services customers, management, coworkers, contractors, and vendors. Duties can include preparing verbal and written communications periodically. These communications may include but not limited to, ad hoc reports, project status, maintenance timing and procedures.

Manage project(s) including scope, schedule, cost, safety, site responsibility and system performance

  • Manage the life of projects post construction including contracting, schedule development, monitoring, cost control measures, procurement/contracting strategies, vendor selection, warranty management, invoice oversight, and integration processes as applicable.

  • Thorough review of invoices to ensure scope is completed and invoice amount is accurate for the scope performed. This can include site inspections and scope verification, follow up calls, and documentation of outstanding items. A proactive heads up to management is desired for complex or confusing scope activities and expected pricing.

  • Ensure invoice accounting is correct for the site and project as well as use of Activity code for the scope performed (MAINT vs RISK)

  • For typical and periodic scope and pricing, such as generator and switchgear preventive maintenance, ensure scope and pricing is correct per the contracts with the vendors, suppliers, and contractors for the period the scope was performed

  • Ensure Duke Safety Plan is used and followed for on-site Duke scope of services.

  • Safety Observation, including identifying and correcting unsafe site conditions, practices, behaviors and violations of safety rules. Reporting on safety observations through appropriate form processes.

  • Ensure SPCC Plans are up to date, accurate for the site and included equipment, physically and electronically located per the plan and with records and correctly utilized and followed per the plan's implementation requirements for inspections and reporting.

  • Take a lead role in the creation, follow-up, completion, and distribution of Incident Reports for sites assigned in a timely manner.

Maintain and operate assigned projects according to provided design and construction with focus on system availability

  • Includes attention to system performance and condition through, remote monitoring, internal and external communication, budget, lessons learned, risk plan, quality plan, safety plan, environmental plan, security plan, data management plan, communications and reporting plan, and change management.

Basic/Required Qualifications

Note: This posting is for one open position. Dependent on relative experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below.

Operations Manager I

  • Associates degree AND two (2) years required minimum related work experience

  • In Lieu of Associates degree and two (2) years experience listed above, High School/GED degree AND five (5) years required minimum related work experience

Operations Manager II

  • Bachelors degree AND five (5) years required minimum related work experience

  • In lieu of Bachelors degree and five (5) years experience listed above, High School/GED degree AND nine (9) years required minimum related work experience

Desired Qualifications
  • Associates or Bachelors degree in a technical field with focus in diesel generators, electrical, and/or mechanical systems

  • 2 years experience in a technical role with focus on diesel and/or natural gas-powered generators, electrical, and/or mechanical systems

  • 4 years related experience

  • Certifications: Utility technical certifications, professional engineer, diesel mechanic, switchgear service technician, controls designer/technician

Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of diesel and natural gas fired electric power generators and systems

  • Working knowledge of low and medium voltage switchgear

  • Mechanical and electrical aptitude

  • Working Knowledge of Decision Making, Critical Thinking, and Problem Solving

  • Project related work experience

  • Risk Management, Project Leadership, Proven Collaborative Team Member

  • Utility Experience, Construction Management knowledge

  • Working knowledge to proficiency in project related Scheduling/ Cost Controls

  • RCA (Root Cause Analysis)

Working Conditions
  • Field Mobility Classification - Work will be performed in various field locations, as needed, after the onboarding period. However, field employees are required to live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location.

  • Field work environment including office, field, and remote

  • Field work includingdriving to sites, performing inspections, and occasional equipment operation
