Responsibilities
Provides direct support to plant operations and maintenance, primarily in the form of design changes, engineering calculations, and technical recommendations for improvement of the plant electrical and I&C systems
Supports assigned engineering changes through work order reviews, corrective action program assignments, and field installation support activities
Provides engineering / technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity.
Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities; deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decision that may affect the work of the team.
Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
Conducts engineering related studies.
Completes routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces.
Displays increasing competency to troubleshoot, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures, proficient in technical and analytical competencies.
Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.
Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
Participates in technical training activities such as formal engineering mentoring and group specific training classes.
Basic / Required Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
4-6 years of engineering experience.
Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience, OR 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
Desired Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.
Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles.
Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations.
Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
Good written and oral communication skills
Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam
Professional Engineer license
Experience in the utility industry
Knowledge / Experience in the areas of Instrumentation & Control Systems, Electrical Power Systems, Digital Process Systems including but not limited to :
Directly involved in troubleshooting on Electrical / I&C issues supporting continued plant operation.
Performs a variety of tasks for development and implementation of electrical changes to the plant. These range from ensuring proper coordination and protection when replacing motors and / or breakers. Calculation impacts and updates are part of the scope.
Performs a variety of tasks for the development and implementation of I&C changes to the plant. These can range from instrument replacements, controller replacements, or small system upgrades. The scope includes being able to assess any impacts from an uncertainty aspect along with updating the calculations. Cyber Security and an assessment of digital impacts on site with the equipment replacement are part of the work involved.
Performs assessments and appropriate documentation updates based upon industry OE. An example would be fault contributions from battery chargers being higher than originally estimated based upon current industry information.
Experience with CAS (Consolidated Asset Suite) and / or NAS (Nuclear Asset Suite)
Experience with design changes, calculations, procurement specifications, 50.59
Knowledge / Experience with Cyber Security Procedures / Processes related to Design Changes
Specific Requirements
Ability to achieve Unescorted Access / Security clearance
Expected to obtain Duke Energy Nuclear qualification to independently prepare Engineering Design Changes, Digital Engineering Design Changes, Calculations, Design Verification, 10 CFR 50.59 Applicability Determinations, Screens and Evaluations.
This position will have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed in office and plant environments.
Additional hours expected as workload / business need requires.
Typical Office environment with flexibility to support plant operations. Must be able to work in an industrial environment safely.
Hybrid Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to HNP as required for ERO responsibilities.
