Position Summary


This is the third level of the non-Engineer degreed technical support role job classification. Engineering Technologist Ill provide technical expertise to solve more complex problems and leadership skills to provide oversight and direction of work in a specific area of expertise with limited supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with a high degree of independence. This position will report to the Coal Combustion Products (CCP) Supervisor - Operations & Maintenance and support the Marshall site (Terrell, NC). As the CCP System Owner, you will: operate & maintain and respond to alarms associated with leachate, basin pumping systems, GCAP system (groundwater extraction, treatment, and infiltration system) and associated back-up generators; manage vendors who perform preventive and corrective maintenance on CCP assets; oversee vendor load/haul/place operation for produced gypsum (pad), bottom ash (bays), and fly ash (silos); and fill in as a back-up inspector on landfills, cooling ponds, and dams. The position will be based at the Marshall Steam Station in Terrell, NC. Will occasionally require periodic response during off-normal hour periods including weekends, nights, etc to respond to alarms, inclement weather, power loss issues, etc. Some in-state travel may be required (up to 25%) for benchmarking, backup coverage, meetings, etc.

  • Provides deep technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems in area of expertise,
  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities,
  • Independently prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches,
  • Conducts engineering and related studies,
  • Strives to continually improve job-related, technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance,
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities,
  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills,
  • Maintains accurate records and files,
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally

Required/Basic Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in engineering technology
  • 5 years related work experience
  • In lieu of Associates degree(s) AND 5 year(s) related work experience listed above, High School/GED AND 9 year(s) related work experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering Technology
  • In addition to desired degree, 3 years related work experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience in the utility industry.
  • Able to effectively apply basic principles of project management.
  • Prefer competency with Microsoft suite (MS word, MS excel, PPT, MS Outlook, MS Teams)
  • Prefer Maximo work order management and preventative maintenance management experience.
  • Electrical / Mechanical / LOTO work experience preferred.

Working Conditions

  • Outside work approx. 60%
  • Inside work in AC/heated office trailer approx. 40%
  • Sometimes work during inclement weather may be needed in response to power loss or other issues.
  • Hands-on work will be required periodically utilizing Duke's safe work practices, processes, and procedures

Specific Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Either 3 years of relevant industry experience coupled with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (or equivalent), or 5 years of experience and Associate Degree in Engineering Technology (or equivalent), or 9 years equivalent experience without a degree.
