Responsibilities

Relationship Management

  • Develops and manages area governmental, business, and community relationships within Duke Energy’s service area in Alachua, Citrus, Hernando, Levy, Marion, and Sumter counties on behalf of Duke Energy business units to ensure business unit objectives can be successfully achieved and effectively promotes and enhances the company’s image and reputation.
  • Represents Duke Energy in strategic industry / association / chamber organizations to enhance business relationships between Duke Energy and complex, high-value community leaders. Owns and manages the total customer relationship including interfaces with other Duke Energy departments including Duke Energy executives.
  • Remains abreast of trends and developments in the political climate and current public policy issues affecting the company.

Project and Issues Management

Leverages relationships with key community stakeholders in Alachua, Citrus, Hernando, Levy, Marion, and Sumter counties and knowledge of the company’s operational needs and business goals to diagnose issues, identify pathways to resolution, and create or protect value for the company. Must remain knowledgeable of enterprise-wide issues and be responsible for serving as lead negotiator and, frequently, decision maker, to resolve issues affecting Duke Energy. Sometimes serves as media spokesperson for Duke Energy in the community. Must have broad and deep knowledge of electric utility issues. Examples including but not limited to :

  • Siting and construction of company facilities.
  • Electric utility l issues impacting communities.
  • Territorial agreement negotiations.
  • Environmental concerns.
  • Emergency and storm response.
  • Local government permitting.
  • Municipal franchise agreements.
  • Local government tax issues.
  • Philanthropy

  • Develops local philanthropic strategies to use Duke Energy Foundation, community development and business enhancement funds in a strategic way for the communities Duke Energy serves in Alachua, Citrus, Hernando, Levy, Marion, and Sumter counties.
  • Develops budgets and community relations programs and strategically deploys resources. ​
  • Education and Advocacy

  • Contacts and confers with members of local government and other public officials to influence the passage, defeat or amendment to local ordinances or legislation that impacts Duke Energy’s business objectives in Alachua, Citrus, Hernando, Levy, Marion, and Sumter counties.
  • Represents Duke Energy before local governing bodies and serves as primary company point of contact for local elected officials and city / county staff..
  • Studies and evaluates proposed local ordinances and legislation to determine impact on the company affecting things such as taxes, fees, ability to effectively locate and relocate company facilities, service charges, etc.
  • Develops and maintains knowledge of Duke Energy’s public policy, regulatory and business positions to accurately collaborate with key community stakeholders and local government officials.
  • Develops and implements strategies to educate key community stakeholders and local government officials to build advocacy for Duke Energy positions.
  • Develops and maintains comprehensive working knowledge of electric systems and components, including those associated with the company's transmission and distribution system.
  • Basic / Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Finance, Engineering, Communications, Business Administration or other related field
  • In addition to required education, minimum seven (7) years of relevant work experience
  • In lieu of required degree, High School / GED and minimum ten (10) years relevant work experience
  • Desired Qualifications

  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Analytical / problem-solving skills
  • Base knowledge of Duke Energy corporate and utility business and enterprise strategy
  • Demonstrated experience in managing stakeholder and / or government interests
  • Ability to work with minimal daily direction
  • Extensive & thorough knowledge of electric distribution and transmission systems & grid operations
  • 10-plus years’ experience with Duke Energy, or equivalent experience with lead responsibility for managing governmental and / or business and community relations.
  • Comprehensive financial and business acumen.
  • Political savvy and thorough understanding of local and state political processes.
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution and management skills, leadership skills, and facilitation skills.
  • Working Conditions

  • Valid driver's license
  • 2 - 3 days per week in office
  • Attendance at early morning, night and weekend community meetings and activities
  • Extensive travel throughout the assigned territory and occasionally the state, 40-50%
  • Requires availability 24 / 7 for storm response or other issues / emergencies.
  • Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility.
