Summary

This is the career / senior level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level manage work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. They are fully competent in use of concepts and procedures. They identify problems, develop solutions, and take actions to resolve. Senior Engineer represents a level at which career may stabilize for many years.

This position supports a corporate based team that manages the Duke Energy Nuclear Fleet Air Operated Valve (AOV) / Motor Operated Valve (MOV) Program. This fleet position provides oversight and guidance for all stations in the execution of the needed actions to maintain compliance with all code and regulatory requirements for AOVs and MOVs in support of the AOV and MOV engineers stationed at each Nuclear Station.

Individual will be required to pass site security access requirements including General Employee Training, Radiation Worker Training, Security Clearance checks, and subject to the site's Fitness for Duty Program. Periodic travel will be required.

Responsibilities

  • Technical lead for the fleet with respect to application of AOV / MOV code and regulatory requirements.
  • Administration / Ownership of corporate AOV / MOV program documents and Fleet Procedures.
  • Review of site AOV / MOV program document revisions
  • Preparation / Checking of AOV / MOV calculations
  • Review and approval of AOV / MOV Diagnostic Test Traces.
  • Owner of budgeting, interface, and required updates for Fleet AOV Software
  • Fleet representative for industry AOV working groups.
  • Review and disposition industry OE.
  • Lead for the fleet AOV Working Group
  • Provides engineering / technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility.
  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.
  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
  • Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
  • Effectively communicates with all levels of management in a professional manner.
  • Willingness to accept new responsibilities and be eager to learn new concepts and technologies in support of company initiatives.

Working Conditions

  • Typically, an office environment with some work on site at a Nuclear Power Plant facility.
  • On site work required during qualification process
  • Some shift work during Nuclear Unit outage time periods
  • Hybrid worker - 50 % remote for base schedule
  • On Site Work Location can reside at any Duke Energy Nuclear plant or at the corporate office in Charlotte, NC
  • Basic / Required Qualifications

    Nuclear Engineer III

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • A Master 's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering
  • 4-6 years of engineering experience
  • Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience
  • Senior Nuclear Engineer

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer.
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience, or 5 years of engineering experience AND state registration as a Professional Engineer.
  • Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience
  • Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as AOV, MOV engineer
  • Experience with AOV / MOV setup calculation software (KVAP / MIDAS)
  • Experience / previous qualification with EPRI Performance Prediction Calculations
  • Experience analyzing AOV / MOV Test traces (Quiklook, PGNTest, MIDAS, SuperTrend)
  • Experience in the utility industry
  • Professional Engineer
  • Previous engagement with industry user groups for AOVs / MOVs
  • Experience and knowledge of other AOV / MOV software.
  • Proficient in principles of project management.
  • Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department.
  • Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of customers in all levels of an organization.
  • Demonstrated effective analytical, problem solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to deliver superior results within allocated time through effective prioritization, scheduling, planning and execution of assigned work.
  • Demonstrated the ability to work as part of a team, be a self-starter, exercise flexibility, and take personal responsibility for assigned accountabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing processes, regulations, responsibilities, and work environments.
  • Specific Requirements

  • Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience
  • In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified.
  • Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access.
  • Willingness to work extended hours with changes in work schedule whenever necessary which at times could include call outs to support stations in an emergent condition.
  • This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.
