Duke University Health System Seeks Radiologist or Nuclear Medicine Physician for Vice Chair for Information Technology and Clinical Informatics

Duke University Health System (DUHS) and its Department of Radiology seek an experienced Radiologist or Nuclear Medicine physician to serve as Vice Chair for Information Technology and Clinical Informatics. This role provides strategic leadership and oversees clinical applications and information technology resources supporting clinical, educational, research, and administrative missions within the Department of Radiology.

Reporting directly to the Chair of Radiology and administratively to the Chief Health Information Officer for Duke Health, the Vice Chair collaborates with Vice Chairs, Division Chiefs, departmental executive teams, and institutional leadership to advance technology-driven innovation, optimize workflows, improve patient care quality, and enhance educational and research initiatives.

Appointment and Reporting Structure: The Vice Chair reports directly to the Chair of Radiology and collaborates closely with the DUHS Chief Health Information Officer. The position requires senior leadership and a collaborative approach within a complex organizational structure.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and implementation of strategic and operational informatics plans specific to Radiology and image management.
  • Provide clinical oversight and leadership to the enterprise clinical applications and IT teams supporting DUHS missions.
  • Serve as primary contact and advocate for integration, optimization, and expansion of Radiology IT systems, including Visage PACS, Epic Radiant, AI applications, speech recognition, and other key systems.
  • Develop clinical workflow models collaboratively with clinical, technical, and administrative stakeholders to optimize system efficiency and efficacy.
  • Act as the Radiology representative on DUHS institutional IT committees and initiatives, advocating for departmental priorities and ensuring effective interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Stay informed on emerging trends in medical informatics, continuously updating strategies and systems to maintain cutting-edge operational capabilities.
  • Integrate IT and clinical informatics training into residency and faculty education programs to ensure readiness for evolving clinical practices and healthcare delivery systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct the selection, negotiation, implementation, and ongoing management of departmental IT solutions, ensuring interoperability, minimal downtime, and robust data management.
  • Serve as liaison between Radiology and institutional IT leadership to align departmental and institutional goals and promote cost-effective IT strategies.
  • Oversee vendor relationships, manage negotiations, training, system installations, upgrades, and performance monitoring.
  • Maintain operational oversight of departmental IT systems, ensuring minimal disruption and consistent availability of critical resources.
  • Lead departmental strategic planning efforts related to IT resources, budgeting, and prioritization of initiatives.
  • Provide leadership in data reporting, analytics, benchmarks, and metrics essential for clinical, research, educational, and administrative purposes.
  • Collaborate with departmental and institutional leaders to align IT resources with research goals and clinical initiatives.
  • Lead initiatives for cybersecurity, data privacy compliance, and quality assurance relating to research data and imaging informatics.
  • Support researchers and faculty in grant applications, technology resource allocation, and regulatory compliance.
  • Mentor IT personnel and research staff, fostering professional growth, innovation, and a collaborative environment.

Qualifications:

  • MD/DO, board-certified Radiologist or Nuclear Medicine physician.
  • Proven expertise and national leadership in clinical informatics and information technology.
  • Demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publications in informatics or IT highly desirable.
  • Clinical Informatics board certification through the American Board of Preventative Medicine highly desirable but not required.

Position Composition: This is a dual administrative and clinical position, with responsibilities allocated approximately 40% administrative and 60% clinical practice within the Department of Radiology.
