Occupational Summary

The Data Analyst is responsible for providing data analysis, data cleaning, data storage, and data access support for campus and community partnerships. The role involves working with diverse data types and sources and providing technical support for applied and community-engaged research activities. This includes planning, organizing, conducting, storing, and accessing quantitative analyses and data. The position regularly interacts with units within the Duke Office of Durham and Community Affairs (DCA), the senior team, and internal and external stakeholders.

This is a one-year term-limited position, with the possibility of renewal based on satisfactory performance and grant availability.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Partnership Database Management (40%)
  • Translate, update, and maintain accumulated and growing datasets; create displays and graphics to improve accessibility.
  • Request and integrate updated data into existing datasets.
  • Plan and program new databases.
  • Develop public-facing dashboards with functionality for community partners, enabling data searches, descriptive value displays, and data visualizations based on search and filter parameters.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to establish, maintain, and execute best practices related to data security, governance, testing, documentation, data dictionaries, and metadata repositories.
  • Campus and Community Partner Data Support (55%)
  • Provide technical data processing, cleaning, and analysis assistance to campus and community partners in alignment with Duke’s Strategic Community Impact Plan (SCIP) focus areas:
    • Housing: Housing Affordability and Infrastructure.
    • Health: Food Security and Nutrition.
    • Education: Early Childhood Education and K-12 School Readiness.
    • Employment: College and Career Readiness.
    • Community: Nonprofit Capacity.
  • Document SCIP impact metrics by focus area, location, target population, and time.
  • Generate reproducible data-cleaning code for applied research projects, prepare datasets for statistical analysis, and provide descriptive summaries and statistics.
  • Gather requirements from campus and community partners for community-engaged research projects, assess utility for achieving SCIP goals, and link or supplement datasets as necessary.
  • Analyze local economic data and indicators to track progress and outcomes related to SCIP focus areas.
  • Collect and analyze progress or final grant and sponsorship reports, sharing relevant information with stakeholders.
  • Support Carnegie Elective Re-Classification for Community Engagement efforts by collecting, analyzing, and communicating community engagement activities across learning, teaching, research, and scholarship.
  • Create meaningful visualizations tailored for audiences such as community partners, campus partners, DCA teams, and researchers.
  • Communicate data using accessible and impactful methods, including graphics, presentations, shareable content, and interactive reports or pages on the Partnership Platform.
  • Contribute to the knowledge base of the unit and organization.
  • Other Duties as Assigned (5%)
  • Perform other tasks, duties, and responsibilities as assigned.
Required Qualifications

Education/Training

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field such as Data Science, Statistics, Public Policy, or a comparable discipline. Advanced degree preferred.

Experience

  • Experience in data analysis, data visualization, and database management.
  • Familiarity with applied and community-engaged research is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in data visualization tools and statistical software.

  • Knowledge of data security, governance, and documentation best practices.
  • Effective communication skills for engaging with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in data cleaning and quantitative analysis.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires knowledge and skills generally acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree program in business, computer science, mathematics, statistics or social sciences.

Experience

Work requires knowledge of both statistical analysis and interpretation generally acquired through at least two years of relevant experience.
