Occupational Summary

Perform all levels of repair and preventive maintenance on steam distribution, chilled water, domestic water, air, gas, and vacuum systems. Assist higher-level mechanics in their areas of responsibility.

Work Performed

  • Clean mechanical rooms and deliver parts as needed.
  • Assist other mechanics and perform basic steamfitting maintenance tasks under the supervision of higher-level mechanics or supervisors.
  • Perform basic calculations and conversions related to maintenance tasks.
  • Operate and maintain hand and power tools associated with steamfitting and maintenance work.
  • Process hot work permits and perform fire watch safety duties.
  • Complete paperwork, including work orders, inventory forms, and preventive maintenance records.
  • Maintain and repair steam valves rated between 150 lbs to 300 lbs and perform minor maintenance on low-pressure steam components.
  • Perform intermediate mathematical calculations, such as ratios, proportions, algebra, area, volume, circumference, and the Pythagorean Theorem.
  • Use and maintain rigging equipment such as block and tackle, chain hoists, come-alongs, jacks, and tuggers.
  • Install appropriate pipe hangers for piping systems and read pipe support drawings and symbols.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, including plot plans, equipment location plans, P&IDs, piping orthographic drawings, structural steel plans, piping ISOs, and line indexes.
  • Follow and interpret pipefitting standards, codes, and specifications while identifying pipe components and specifications.
  • Perform trade-related calculations, such as thermal expansion, table conversions, and right-angle trigonometry.
  • Identify and install types of pipe, flanges, gaskets, and bolts; install pipe sleeves and floor penetrations.
  • Test piping systems, including pretests, service flow tests, head pressure tests, hydrostatic tests, and steam blow tests.
  • Install, maintain, and remove various valves and components such as steam and condensate valves, safety relief valves, and condensate pumping systems.
  • Prepare base metals for welding and perform cutting tasks using oxyfuel, plasma arc, and air carbon arc methods.
  • Perform basic and advanced welding tasks, including shielded metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, and flux-cored arc welding on various metals.
  • Maintain steam traps, radiators, heat coils, and vacuum systems, including mechanical, thermostatic, and thermodynamic components.
  • Install and maintain steam control valves, pressure-reducing valves, steam converters, and steam reheat systems.
  • Conduct job-site inspections for compliance with standards and codes.
  • Review design documents and evaluate compliance with standards and codes.
  • Train lower-level personnel on steamfitting-related topics and preventive maintenance procedures.
  • Use computer software relevant to maintenance operations for planning and scheduling work assignments.
  • Analyze system or component failures and recommend corrective actions.
  • Perform supervisory duties as required and provide logistical support for maintenance activities.
  • Design and implement preventive maintenance procedures for mechanical equipment.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Education

Work requires an educational background normally acquired through a high school education with course work in skilled crafts, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience. Possess a valid North Carolina driver's license. Received training on General OSHA standards and requirements, hot work permits, fire watch, confined space entry, and lock-out/tag-out procedures.

Experience

Work requires 3 years' experience in installing, maintaining and/or repairing utlity distribution and building utility systems.
