BASIC FUNCTIONS: To assist veterinarians in managing all aspects of health of the prosimians at the Duke Lemur Center

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform technical skills such as animal restraint (nonhuman primates), venipuncture, injections, surgical assistance, radiology, and formulation/administration of special medications/diets as requested
  • Anesthetize animals as required and serve as support technician during procedures requiring anesthesia; assist in animal surgery as requested
  • Serve as a point of contact for the husbandry team regarding animal health and welfare concerns, scheduled procedures, diet change requests, and maintain associated records; triage and elevate concerns to the veterinarians as appropriate
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for all applicable special projects and research department needs for veterinary services
  • Evaluate potential problems relating to the health and welfare of animals or their environmental conditions; notify clinical veterinarian and/or husbandry staff of potential problems and/or take appropriate action to resolve problems
  • Organize, schedule, and facilitate preventative health procedures, emergency care, and research projects throughout the year, ensuring requests have adequate preparation, and assisting as needed
  • Perform routine diagnostic laboratory procedures (i.e., bloodwork, fecal exam, urinalysis, etc.)
  • Administer routine and special treatments and medications for animals as instructed, prescribed, and/or required
  • Manage daily treatment sheets and weight schedules and communicate these needs with the husbandry team
  • Provide daily husbandry care and participate in developing and maintaining appropriate and varied enrichment plans for hospitalized and quarantined animals
  • Assist in processing health examinations and related requirements for interstate and international animal shipments; transport animals, supplies, and materials; operate motor vehicles as required
  • Communicate in a positive and professional manner with a variety of personalities; lead by example and demonstrate a team-based, collaborative approach
  • Demonstrate the ability to safely handle animals (nonhuman primates)
  • Input accurate and detailed records into collection database in a timely fashion
  • Manage laboratory/veterinary equipment maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Manage cleaning, stocking and inventory schedule of all veterinary areas
  • Establish quarantine areas as instructed and keep stocked with supplies
  • Conduct staff trainings in animal handling and other veterinary related trainings as requested
  • Assist with tracking budget for applicable purchased items
  • Manage work study student(s) schedule, training and assigned daily tasks
  • Must be available to work weekends, holidays, and occasional after-hours shifts as needed

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires an Associate Degree in Veterinary Technology with RVT. ALAT certification preferred.

Experience

Work requires at least one year of experience in a laboratory, zoological, animal care facility or related setting to become familiar with the technical tasks involved in the care of animals (dog, cat, and large animal acceptable). OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
