Occupational Summary
This is a 19.9 hour a week position under the direct supervision of the Director of Aquatics and Risk Management. The Aquatics and Risk Supervisor is responsible for assisting the Director of Aquatics and Risk Management with overseeing the lifeguard operations as well as risk management for the Duke Rec & PE department. This includes training and scheduling lifeguards, maintaining department-wide emergency equipment and first aid kits, training department staff in emergency procedures, and assessing department events and programs from a risk management standpoint.
The Aquatics and Risk Supervisor will foster a safe, equitable, and inclusive community through education and the removal of barriers for program staff and participants. This role will assist with supervising all part-time aquatics staff, and may require evening, weekend, and holiday hours.
Work Performed
Assist with overseeing the lifeguard audit program
Ensure lifeguards are proficient with emergency procedures and all pool policies.
Create and oversee an incentive program for lifeguards and head lifeguards.
Attend risk management committee meetings as needed, to stay informed and contribute insights.
Assist with regularly reviewing aquatics and department-wide EAPs and update as necessary.
Assist with regularly reviewing and updating the department’s crisis manual.
Assist with training departmental staff in emergency policies and procedures.
Assist with hiring and training of part-time aquatics staff.
Provide onsite supervision and feedback of aquatics staff on duty.
Assist with monthly lifeguard in-service training.
Assist with managing staff schedules and covering shifts as needed.
Teach at least two First Aid/CPR/AED classes per semester.
Keep abreast of current research in aquatics field; obtain and maintain appropriate certifications.
Support and help advance the university and department’s commitment to anti-racism and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification
Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) Certification
Experience
One or more years of professional work experience in aquatics or related fields.
Preferred Qualifications:
Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Trainer (LGIT) Certification
Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Trainer (WSIT) Certification
Current Certified Pool Operator (CPO) Certification
Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification
Experience
Two or more years of professional work experience in aquatics or related fields. Three or more years of supervisory and management experience.
Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
Ability to communicate with diverse populations.
Demonstrated understanding and a strong commitment to customer service orientation.
Ability to maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships.
Ability to think creatively and proactively.
Utilize good judgement; reliability; initiative and resourcefulness.
Knowledge of current trends in aquatics, recreation, aquatics management, and risk management.
Knowledge and ability to monitor pool facility equipment and chemicals.
Ability to learn computer software programming including Fusion, When to Work, Trello, and HydroApps.
Commitment to ongoing education, staying updated on the latest aquatic-related guidelines, and maintaining certification through the American Red Cross.
Shares the responsibility of the mission, strategic planning and goals for Recreation and Physical Education.
