Olabisi Lab Job Description:
LAB RESEARCH ANALYST I

 

Occupational Summary

The applicant will be part of the OLABISI lab, a physician–scientist run lab that studies how APOL1 gene variants cause kidney disease in individuals of recent African ancestry.  APOL1 Kidney disease explain 40% of excess risk of kidney failure in African Americans. The lab leverages human derived cell-based models and APOL1-transgenic mouse models to study the underlying mechanism of this devastating disease. The goal of the lab is to discover innovative prevention and cure APOL1 Kidney disease. Olabisi Lab is a vibrant research environment that interacts with other researchers in Duke Molecular Physiology Institute and Duke Division of Nephrology.

 

Work Performed

  • Perform DNA genotyping by Taqman Assay and Sanger sequencing
  • Manage a transgenic mouse colony, including but not limited to live mouse handling, ordering, genotyping, breeding, routine monitoring of animal health, sample collection and processing, maintaining and updating mouse line records etc.
  • Assist in the design and analysis of experiments; carry out experiments with minimal or no immediate supervision and record and maintain all acquired data in specified formats for scientific reliability and general comprehension
  • Administering compounds to mice (injections, oral gavage), collecting urine and blood, performing dissections to isolate and characterize various tissues from mice.
  • Process mouse biospecimens such as urine, blood and tissues for flow ELISA, histology, Immunoblotting, nucleic acid isolation etc.
  • Perform simple techniques in cell biology and microscopy: examples include cell isolation and culture procedures, immunocytochemistry, tissue cryosectioning, microscope imaging, cell sorting, and some basic molecular biology and biochemistry.
  • Maintain cell culture lines, including preparation of culture media, chemicals, reagents and solutions
  • Perform RNA extraction and qPCR
  • Perform routine lab maintenance, cleaning, ordering, and organizing.
  • Maintain lab SOPs, maintain organization of the lab which includes all equipment, freezers, fridges, reagents in these areas and general upkeep of lab space.
  • Understand, comply and assist in enforcing all safety standards and procedures to ensure a safe working environment for all laboratory staff
  • Maintain adequate stock of lab supplies and ensure proper setup and functioning of equipment.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate documentation of activities in an electronic laboratory notebook.
  • Learn and develop new lab techniques and assist in the training of new personnel.
  • Perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology or other directly related scientific field.

 


Experience:

Work requires two years of research experience. A related master's degree may offset the required years of experience on a 1:1 basis, e.g., a two-year master's degree in lieu of two years of experience.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

 


Preferred Education and Skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, communication and organizational skills. 
  • Proficiency in
  • Experience with the care and handling of mice, proficiency in collecting urine and blood from mice, and molecular biology techniques is preferred, ideally with some experience outside of laboratory classwork (i.e. in a working laboratory) 
  •  Analytical skills to resolve complex problems requiring the use of scientific, technical principles and in-depth, experienced-based knowledge
  • Flexibility, motivation, and ability to work independently. 
  • Willingness and ability to take on multiple projects simultaneously.
