Job Summary / Job Duties and Goals:

The Duke Solid Organ Transplant Surgery and Critical Care Advanced Practice Provider (NP or PA-C) Fellowship rotates through a variety of surgical, medical and critical care settings (see rotation list below). This includes inpatient and outpatient locations.  The APP transplant fellow will work alongside APPs and MDs to provide direct patient care services for surgically and medically ill adult and adolescent patients at Duke University Hospital or in the clinic in collaboration with medical and surgical physicians.  The APP Fellow performs physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, coordinates the care and discharge of patients, may assist in the operating room and provides direct patient care services.  The APP Fellow contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and provides leadership in the organization. 

Rotations include (but not limited to):

  • Liver Transplant (10 weeks)
  • Kidney Transplant (10 weeks)
  • Lung Transplant (10 weeks)
  • Surgical Intensive Care Unit (5 weeks)
  • Medical Intensive Care Unit (5 weeks)
  • Transplant Infectious Disease (2 weeks)
  • Psychiatry (2 weeks)
  • Endocrinology (1 week)
  • Abdominal Transplant Clinic (5 weeks)
  • Potential Electives: Operating Room assisting*, General Medicine Procedures, Heart/CTICU

*Due to solid organ transplant being a two-attending physician operation and the need to train surgical fellows and physician residents, assistance in these cases will be limited. Instead, the fellow may be utilized in general surgery cases as available/needed.

 

Job Eligibility Requirements

Education (Must graduate by August 2025)

NP:       Graduate of DNP or MSN Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program for adult care

PA:       Graduate of Master’s Degree or Doctoral Degree ARC accredited Physician Assistant program

 

Certification 

NP:       only considering ACNP or AGACNP

PA:       PA-C

 

Licensure 

NP:       Current unrestricted RN license issued by or recognized by the NCBON with authorization to practice as an NP.

PA:       Current unrestricted license issued by NCMB with authorization to practice as a PA.

 

 

Experience

None required, new or recent graduates welcome to apply

 

Life support:

              X BLS (required)

             X ACLS (required)

 

 

Physical and mental requirements:

  • Able to clearly articulate scope of practice, and practices within those guidelines as a Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant in the state of North Carolina and within the Duke University Health System. 
  • Able to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively to solve complex problems
  • Able to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership, and others.
  • Able to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, perform health assessments, treatment, and follow-up.
  • Able to use fine motor skills
  • Able to record activities, document assessments & interventions; prepare reports and presentations;
  • Able to use computer and learn new software programs
  • Able to provide leadership in clinical area of expertise and in meeting organizational goals
  • Able to navigate the Hospital and DUHS to provide clinical expertise to specific patient populations
  • Able to withstand prolonged standing and walking with the ability to move or lift at least fifty pounds
  • Able to remain focused and organized
  • Able to work collaboratively with all levels of personnel

 

Job Hours and Program duration

 

Primary hours will be Monday – Friday, 12-hour days. Expect schedule to fluctuate based on rotation needs including weekends and nights.

 

This is an immersive 1-year commitment (October 1 – September 30).

 

Employment is not guaranteed beyond this 12-month program.
