Research Associate

Pediatric Brain Imaging Lab
Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences

Occupational Summary:
The Pediatric Brain Imaging Lab in the Department of Psychiatry at Duke University is seeking a Research Associate to support cutting-edge research on the neurodevelopmental mechanisms of psychiatric illness in children and adolescents. The Research Associate will work closely with principal investigators, postdoctoral fellows, and students to design, execute, and analyze studies involving advanced neuroimaging and behavioral assessments.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to research that advances our understanding of brain development and mental health in pediatric populations, while also fostering professional growth in a collaborative and innovative environment.

Work Performed:
The Research Associate may assist with the following duties and activities:

  1. Grant and Manuscript Preparation:
    • Assist in preparing research grants, reports, and manuscripts for publication.
    • Conduct literature reviews and contribute to study design and protocol development.
  2. Data Management and Analysis:
    • Process and analyze neuroimaging data using specialized software (e.g., FSL, SPM, Freesurfer).
    • Maintain accurate and secure databases, ensuring data quality and integrity.
    • Collaborate with the team to perform statistical analyses and interpret findings.
  3. Lab Operations:
    • Help manage lab equipment, software licenses, and other resources.
    • Ensure compliance with institutional and federal research regulations, including IRB protocols and safety guidelines.
    • Attend regular lab and study meetings
    • In person, onsite work required
  4. Research Execution:
    • Assist in conducting MRI scans and behavioral assessments, ensuring adherence to research protocols and ethical guidelines.
    • Help supervise and train research assistants, undergraduate students, and other lab members in data collection procedures.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree or higher in neuroscience, psychology, biomedical engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience in pediatric research and/or neuroimaging
  • Proficiency in programming languages (e.g., R, Python, MATLAB)
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Track record of prior publications

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum qualifications include a master’s degree or higher in a relevant field and at least two years of research experience. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience will be considered.

This position is based on Duke University’s campus in Durham, NC. The Research Associate will work in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment with opportunities for collaboration across the Department of Psychiatry and the greater Duke research community.
