Introduction:
Research Computing (https://rc.duke.edu) at Duke University is seeking a Research Computing Engagement Specialist to join our team. This role is dedicated to fostering strong partnerships between faculty members, graduate students, and IT service teams, ensuring seamless integration of advanced computing technologies into academic research and education.
A key objective of this role is to promote research computing services by engaging the research community and partnering with data science collaborators to organize and deliver community events.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred.
- 5 years of combined education/experience in a related field required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with campus IT services for data science (e.g., RStudio, Jupyter Notebook/Python, Research Computing).
Other Requirements:
- Great teamwork skills, with the ability to work either as an individual contributor or a subject matter leader.
- Strong ability to work independently to deliver office hours, training, and engagement activities.
- Excellent communication skills, particularly in translating technical issues between researchers and IT staff.
- Experience working with diverse stakeholders and a collaborative approach to sharing knowledge and skills.
- Flexibility and adaptability to evolving research and technology needs.
This position is:
Hybrid. The position allows hybrid work (approximately twice per month) or in-person work at our Durham, NC location, with occasional travel (approximately once per month) to other institutions in North Carolina and work outside normal business hours for planned activities. Rarely, may be contacted during off-hours.

Essential Job Duties:
- Serve as a liaison between researchers and the computing teams, understanding and addressing researchers’ unique computational needs.
- Advise researchers on best practices, tools, and technologies for computational research. Provide one-on-one consultations, lead group training sessions, and mentor student interns.
- Work closely with researchers to gather requirements for computational resources, software, and tools, and communicate these needs to the research computing team for implementation.
- Increase awareness of research computing resources and advocate for the adoption of advanced computing technologies in research and education.
- Plan and deliver workshops, office hours, and other engagement activities to support the research community.
- Develop and maintain clear documentation, training materials, and instructional guides to help faculty and students access and effectively use research computing resources.
