Job Summary
To define the role of an EMT in the Emergency Management Services Department in a patient care setting. EMT's may perform technical patient care functions in accordance with their scope of practice under state law and in accordance with the policy/procedure and under direction of the Paramedic. If there is any conflict between the state law regarding scope of practice and the policy/procedure, the more stringent shall apply. For example, if an activity is permitted under state law but not under policy/procedure, then the policy/procedure shall govern.
Essential Functions
- Maintains awareness of changing policies, procedures, and system processes in order to most effectively expedite patient care.
- Communicates effectively. Establishes and maintains two way communication with peers, staff, physicians and administration.
- Provides patient care in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures as directed.
- Follows through on problems that may compromise patient care by using the appropriate chain of command.
- Cooperates well with peers and supports group decisions.
- Ensure that supplies and equipment for patient care are readily available and organized in an efficient manner.
- Correctly identifies and uses appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Maintains supply availability and continually restocks areas as needed.
- Consistently uses skilled communication which demonstrates congruence between words and actions and holds others accountable for doing the same.
- Demonstrates appropriate interpersonal skills for all age groups.
- Participates in departmental and unit specific performance improvement initiatives.
- Completes timely documentation in the EMR in accordance with policy and procedure.
- Demonstrates ability to safely operate emergency vehicles at all times.
- Practices according to Indiana State EMS guidelines and regulations, applicable standards and regulatory guidelines.
- Completes ambulance checks on every shift as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Complies with all policies and standards.
Qualifications
- Technical School Completion of EMT Course required
- Technical School EMT Advanced course preferred
- 0-1 years Clinical experience in a hospital settiing required
- 0-1 years Emergecy medicine experince preferred

- Ability to analyze and improve patient flow and operational processes.
- Knowledge of patient care charts and patient histories.
- Knowledge of laboratory and quality control procedures.

Licenses and Certifications
- Drivers License - MDOT Medical Physical State drivers license required
- EMT - Emergency Medical Tech Certification EMT- Certification required
- BCLS - Basic Life Support required
