Summary/Objective
Assist the Day Camp Program Coordinator in overall program development, staff training, and supervision of all staff and campers on site.

Essential Functions
· Responsible for staff team development and cohesiveness
· Assists the Day Camp Program Coordinator in the planning and implementation of staff training
· Acts as a substitute counselor when needed
· Provides resources and ideas to counselors for games, art projects, teaching methods, and behavior management
· Assists the coordinator in the scheduling of staff for camper groups, extended care and bus duty
· Assists the coordinator and counselors in carrying out daily scheduling and planning
· Upholds camp policies and to use the camp’s philosophy as a basis in working with everyone-campers, counselors, and parents
· Helps maintain Facebook and social media posts
· Responsible for knowing each group’s daily activities and for making suggestions or providing other kinds of support as needed.
· Assists the camp coordinator in other matters as directed.
· Assist/lead deliver opening/closing ceremonies, theme week activities, rainy day activities, and family nights.
· Working with site coordinators, staff, families, and volunteers to create a positive camp experience for all.
· Maintain emotionally and physically safe environment for youth.
· Develop and lead high quality activities/lessons for youth in an outdoor environment.
· Communicate with Site Coordinator regarding concerns about children.
· Submit incident reports timely and as needed.
· Have knowledge, understanding, and application of all program policies, procedures, and best practices.
· Work cooperatively with children, families, other program, and building staff.
· Provide support to volunteers.
· Attend family nights, staff meetings, and trainings as required.
· Maintain current required certifications.
· Complete additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibility
The Day Camp Lead Staff will provide resources, education, and ideas to Day Camp Staff. This position does not hire or terminate staff, but will assist the Out of School Time Director and Day Camp Coordinator with staff observations. The Day Camp Lead Staff will be in charge of staff when the Day Camp Director and Cay Camp Coordinator are not present.
Work Environment
Day Camp is held in a variety of community and Y locations. These locations include the YMCA at the Essentia Wellness Center and the North Star Academy, local hiking trails, outdoor parks, Y locations, and other indoor and outdoor environments. All day camp staff will encounter uneven walking conditions and a variety of weather conditions.

· Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff
· Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques

· Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers
· Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
· Operates with daily exposure to the sun and heat and exposure to various animals, plants, and environmental conditions
· Occasionally sit, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
The Day Camp Lead Staff is a seasonal position that serves during the summer months (June through August) up to 35 hours/week. Day Camp programming runs Monday through Friday, however some weekend and evening hours for staff development and training may be required.
The Day Camp Lead Staff schedule will be based on when they are most needed and during times when the Day Camp Director and Day Camp Coordinator are not present. Staff who work 4-5 shifts per week will be granted a maximum of 8 shifts off over the duration of summer programming. Staff may use any earned part-time paid time off to cover these shifts as well.
Travel
Travel to different community and Y locations will generally be conducted by local bus company. There may be times that Day Camp Lead Staff will be required to use a Y vehicle. The Day Camp Lead Staff may be required to travel to different Y locations/program sites in their own vehicle, depending on schedule or work.
Required Education and Experience
· At least 18 years of age
· Certifications: CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer or equivalent, and Basic First Aid (required). Training can be provided upon hiring and must be obtained within 60 days. Higher levels of certification are accepted
· Previous camp experience preferred.
· Ability to accompany campers to main program areas, lead small and large group activities, supervise campers’ participation in structured and unstructured activities, demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of campers served, interact appropriately with campers in a variety of situations, appropriately model behavior.
· Ability to communicate with parents maturely and effectively

Preferred Education and Experience
Previous experience working in a day or residential camp serving children.
